For the woman who carries her life with her wherever she goes, things often get messy. The anxiety of feeling like you’ve lost a client’s business card, an important receipt, or your favorite lip gloss is hardly worth it, especially when these items are simply buried underneath miscellaneous clutter in your purse. We know there are certain essentials that need to be with you at all times, so dump out your bag, narrow down what those items are, and we’ll help you organize them.

.: Organizationally-Inclined Handbags
It is amazing how quickly the inside of a beautiful yet simple single-compartment oversized tote can turn into this gaping black hole where belongings are tossed and never found again. The best handbags will have a good balance of style and function--and by function, we mean pockets.
If you’re buying a new purse, some are more organizationally inclined then others. A bag that was literally built for organization (but not for most budgets unfortunately) is the Butler Bag. With little plastic dividers partitioning the interior space, there are compartments for all essentials like phones, writing utensils, water bottles, compact mirrors, a box of mints, and even a slot or two for a magazine or file folder. One of our favorites from the new line is the Cocktail Hybrid ($1,400), a sleek black and white Italian patent leather number that will go with both your work and play wardrobes.
Always a comfy and colorful choice, Vera Bradley’s quilted classics are great weekend bags. The Villager has six slip-in pockets that ring the inside of the bag. Stick some cash in the outer zip pocket so that you can easily access it for those unexpected impulse buys. Keep your iPod in the outer slip pocket so you can easily change the tunes.
A textured-leather Triangle Tote from Banana Republic is a sophisticated style that is perfect for the office. It includes many inner and outer flap and zip pockets (even one that is just for your cell phone) and a handy key fob tab.
Another organizer-friendly option is this Italian-made Buti shopper. A bag with so many great compartments will make it easy for you to find your things. Just assign certain items to specific pockets, and you will always know where they’ll be.
.: Removable Purse Pockets
If you’re partial to your old purse, there are ways to upgrade it and make it more orderly. A few creative minds out there have come up with ingenious removable pocket inserts that will hold all of your things in place and can easily be moved from bag to bag.
The organizers with the most style are handmade from beautifully patterned, decorator-weight cotton and sold at Etsy. With nine different pockets ranging in size, you will have a slot for everything from a pack of tissues to your sunglasses. Once everything is neatly in place, just roll it up, stick it in your bag, and go.
A similar item can be found at Joey Junior. You can order this organizer in a variety of colors and fun prints like “African Leopard” and “Mountain Zebra.” It even comes in ultra suede.
Another way to go is a removable purse lining. A lining insert known as the Chameleon comes with a built-in makeup case and lipstick pockets, while the BagMate is the perfect purse-inside-the-purse with retractable handles to easily lift it (and all of your stuff) out of one bag and move it to another. You’ll never have to go through the trauma of forgetting your phone in your other purse again.
.: Color-Coded Pouches
If the bottom of your bag is commonly cluttered with coins, receipts, perhaps a couple of Band-Aids, and sticks of gum that have fallen out of their packet, it might be time to invest in a collection of small zip pouches.
Having a few pouches in different colors is a great organization method – the red for emergency supplies (nail file, stain remover wipes, etc.), the white for important receipts, the blue for a notepad and pen, the green for loose change -- but it also couldn’t hurt to have labels just in case your memory is shaky. Jane Marvel Zip-top Sandwich Bags come in great girly prints and colors and have little clear windows that can display personalized labels.
See-thru mesh pouches from Walker Bags will keep everything neatly segregated but allow you to see all of your personal items at the same time. We enjoy their Keychain Cases for keeping your gym locker key and membership card together.
Round up your eyeliner sticks, makeup brushes, emery boards, and anything else long and skinny in a fashionable Flower Pop Design Pencil Pouch from The Container Store.
For those with a few extra dollars to throw around, we covet nothing more than Anya Hindmarch’s metallic calfskin Loose Pockets with scalloped edges and a tassel zipper pull. In embossed lettering, each pouch is given a cute little name like “Fun Money,” “Lotions & Potions," “Beauty & the Beast," and “Odds & Sods.” A few whimsical British phrases later, your purse will really be whipped into proper form.
.: Fabulous Key Fobs
The most important thing we can never seem to find in our bags is our set of keys. If you have the same problem, keep your keys locked up with a fabulous fob. Not only will they stay clipped in one place, but they will look extra glamorous with shiny dangling charms and handsome leather straps.
While Coach has a beautiful collection of key chains and clips, our favorite is the Chain Link Coin design which features a gold plated brass charms in classic Coach designs attached to suede leather lacing. If your handbag comes with a key fob tab, just use the dog leash clip to hook it right on there.
Juicy Couture is also a great go-to brand for fobs and key rings baubles. A round logo medal key fob with crown, heart, and Scottie dog charms is one example of their signature accessories. It also comes with a convenient lobster clip.
While we wouldn’t recommend wearing your flip-flops all year long, you can still satisfy your summertime fantasies by carrying around a J.Crew Flip-Flop Key Clip.
For something a little simpler, a Marc Jacobs Monogram Key Loop is minimal but not boring. Choose one in flashy metallic leather and snap it onto your purse.
.: See-Through Satchels
For the gal who prefers to just toss-and-go and can’t be bothered fussing with zippers or fitting the right item into the correct compartment, carrying a see-thru satchel or tote can have two benefits: One, you’ll see everything in your bag; and, two, you might be more motivated to keep your bag clutter-free considering that everyone else will see everything in there, too.
Representing the true quirky nature of its designer, the Miss Marc Tote by Marc Jacobs is made of clear vinyl with a white patent trim and tonal stitching that frames the cute beach girl character drinking from a pineapple.
Incorporating color into a clear tote, Tory Burch outlines her popular logo in bright orange and edges the rest of the bag in the same shade. A small coin purse is included.
A very sophisticated beach bag, the Felix Rey Lucia comes with golden chain link handles, a magnetic closure, and a patent leather zip-top pouch with a leopard grosgrain lining. Available in clear black and white as well.
A chic see-thru drawstring satchel from Ralph Lauren has high-gloss mirrored leather trims and coordinating custom-made metal hardware, which makes it the most luxurious vinyl bag ever. A detachable cosmetic case is included.
