We all understand the importance of the LBD, or Little Black Dress. It seems so far like this will be the summer of the little frock. And why not? Dresses keep you cool in the heat, can be casual or dressy, and they're sexy or sweet but always feminine. Because they're the right thing to wear for many different types of situations, it's wise to stock your closet with a dress for every occasion.

.: Shirt Dress
n. 1. Think of your favorite crisp shirt that flatters your feminine figure. Now think of it longer. 2. Perhaps the most classic of styles. 3. An item that is always en vogue.
Applications:
office. Count on BCBG Max Azria to kick the style quotient up a notch – their pinstripe shirtdress is professional yet feminine at the same time.
weekend. Polo Jeans military shirtdress with button epaulettes and roll-cuff sleeves is very cute, and perfect to wear during a weekend of meeting the girls for an iced latte, and browsing through the shops.
going out. This linen/cotton Carmen Marc Valvo sleeveless shirtdress would be perfect for a warm summer night. The fuller skirt will keep you cool while the princess seams front and back are flattering and feminine.

n. 1. A dress that wraps around and usually ties on the side. 2. Very flattering and feminine.
Applications:
office. We can't talk about wrap dresses without a nod to the woman who defines this timeless style, Diane vonFurstenberg. The patterned dresses in silk are so summery and becoming that you'll want to wear one every day. Available in solid colors or prints, these dresses are a classic that you will be able to wear for years.
weekend. We also love the Kaleid Wrap Dress in Floral Blue by Soundgirl. This sleeveless dress will keep you cool in the summer heat (and so will the price).
going out. Not only is BCBG Max Azria's pink sonar wave silk wrap dress sexy as heck, it's also on sale. This sequin chiffon dress will turn heads and stop hearts.

.: Slip Dress
n. 1. Lingerie-inspired, usually with spaghetti straps and made from the most delicate and wispy of fabrics. 2. A very wearable style for many occasions. 3. A dress that won't keep you warm when the evenings cool down. (So be sure to carry a sweater or jacket.)
Applications:
office. While it might be difficult to get away with a slinky slip dress for the office, the cut can still be passable when in the right fabric and with a jacket or cardigan to throw on for a meeting with clients. We love the lightweight wool (light enough to be worn year-round) twill Alana dress from J.Crew.
weekend. Eyelet dresses are a huge trend this season; Juicy Couture has their own long version of the eyelet slip dress. It's pretty much the quintessential summer weekend dress.
going out. The Twelfth Street Slip Dress with Belt is sure to turn heads. You can wear it with flat sandals or high heels; just keep the footwear delicate.

n. 1. A high-waisted dress, gathered near or just under the bust with a long, loose skirt which skims the body. 2. A style that is flattering and comfortable on all figures. 3. Disguises the stomach area and emphasizes the bust. 4. Perfect for maternity wear or for the weeks before the crunches get rid of the love handles at last.
Applications:
office. The Calvin Klein Jeans Print Dress is a perfect way to carry the trend into the office. The cap sleeves and length offer enough coverage for casual business wear.
weekend. BCBG Max Azria's sweet white eyelet dress with an empire waist is just right for a weekend picnic by the pool or even on the beach. Don't let the white scare you, just be careful with errant drinks and condiments.
going out. Our favorite dressy empire waist frock by far is the Nicole Miller long babydoll dress. The brightly patterned silk with a deep V back and front has us imagining how cool and sexy it would feel to wear on a hot summer night.

.: Shift Dress
n. 1. Style that is cut straight up and down and darted at the bust. 2. First seen in the sixties on stick-thin models, this style is now seen on everyone from stylish college girls to the matronly Queen of England. 3. Available in a variety of lengths. 4. Is a neat but totally chic style.
Applications:
office. A shift dress doesn't have to be from a designer to fit well and look good. The Merona Shift Dress fits and looks like it cost a whole lot more than it does.
weekend. Weekends during the summer are all about getting out there. The comfy terry shift dress from Land's End is the perfect breezy item to throw over your bathing suit on the way to the beach, and the price might just make your summer, too.
going out. Pucci's Lace Shift Dress is a beautiful take on the simple shift style. The hefty price tag is one to be taken seriously, but this is a dress that can be worn for years.
