Forget the LBD (okay, not really—I'd be lost without it). New fashion staples are creeping into our wardrobes and we welcome them with open arms, and extra hangers. Below are our writers' new favorite staples. Which do you think has staying power? You can't walk down the street these days without seeing a scarf wrapped around a stylish neck - or ten. These cozy accessories are here to stay.
No longer is jersey reserved for loungewear and extra soft bedsheets. The latest wear-with-anything dresses are made in this unbelievably comfortable fabric. A cropped jacket is appropriate for pretty much any occasion. And has therefore earned its stripes as a staple for seasons to come.

If you thought the race between Barack and John were getting heated, how about the fashion dash between their wives? Each one has been honing her style skills as the election nears, but as far as I can tell, it seems we're soon to have a winner. Michelle Obama
- Style: Michelle, an admitted Sex and the City fan, is clearly influenced by Sarah Jessica Parker and crew's fashionable ways. We've even gone so far as to say she might be the next Jackie O. Modern and fresh, colorful yet classy, sometimes borderline sexy (knee high boots and a quasi trench dress, anyone?), Michelle still likes to throw in a few curve balls here and there. She has worn a little bit of everything including ultra-wide belts and even black leggings. Some of our favorite looks are here.
- Favorite Brands: Isabel Toledo, Maria Pinto, Donna Ricco, White House/Black Market ... she even shops at the Gap (her 4th of July dress is actually on sale!) and Target.
- Steal Her Look: She'll never give up her black studded belt, but the rest of her closet is eclectic.
Cindy McCain - Style: Before hitting the campaign trail on McCain's first run in 2000, Cindy had an affinity for the frumpy. These days, when in doubt, Cindy's motto is monochrome and streamlined--a safe choice for any potential First Lady. While she has been caught in a pink leather jacket that's probably better left to biker chicks, she was also recently wearing a $300,000 outfit for the Republican Convention. Touché.
- Favorite Brands: Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, St. John… but a lot of her looks can be found at places like Ann Taylor.
- Steal Her Look: Cashmere turtlenecks and her signature three-strand pearl necklace are her fashion staples.
Take a look at the competition and vote for your favorite candidate!

What: A $500 shopping spree at Modadezza.com.
Why: Treat yourself (actually, let us treat you) to a brilliantly simple kaftan dress from loungewear line Coisas de Alice, a unique piece of costume jewelry , or some swimwear from cb Coco Brazil.
How: Go to Modadezza.com, choose all the favorite pieces you'd buy with $500, then come back here and write about them.
We like the classic lines and just-sexy-enough cutout on this black one-piece , and would probably end up pairing this necklace with every black dress we own (which is a lot of dresses).

We love when basics go on sale. These essential pieces are now super affordable, so you can stock up if the tank or tee supply is running low.
This tank ($10.20, was $34) is ideal for layering, but can easily be worn alone, too, thanks to thicker straps that hide your bra.
Wear a lace-trimmed cami under this semi-sheer V-neck tee ($13.50, was $45) and top with a cropped leather jacket for a hint of edginess.
This relaxed heather tee ($17.70, was $59) can stand in for a sweater (and should stand in for a sweatshirt) when paired with jeans for weekend errands.
