What: Trish McEvoy Lash Curling Mascara, $28 Why: Ever since I tried out lash extensions and got a bunch of compliments (except from my mother who said she liked me just the way I am - thanks, Mom) I have been on a quest for a mascara that can duplicate the same volume, drama, and color that the falsies did. Well, after a small fortune spent on disappointing mascaras, I finally found one that did the trick - Trish McEvoy's Lash Curling Mascara. I was used to buying my foundations and powders from Trish, so I trusted the brand, but never thought to venture into eye territory. Little did I know that this mascara has actually been a bestseller for the line for years - it's been featured in Allure Magazine as a must-have product, and continues to fly off the shelves. The wand glides ever so smoothly over my lashes with no fuss and no clumps - and I can actually see my lashes curling on impact. Nifty little parlor trick. So if you are lash obsessed as well, and don't mind spending the money on a good mascara, opt for Trish McEvoy and stay lash happy forever - or at least until the tube runs out. What: Lancôme's Cils Booster XL Super-Enhancing Mascara Base ($21.50) and Définicils Pro High Definition Curved Brush Mascara ($23.50) Why: I’ve been hurt before by smooth talking beauty copy, so I’ll admit to a healthy dose of skepticism when I read such sweet nothings as "fuller, more intense" and “enhanced effect…” I don’t know if it’s because of the way my eyelids are shaped or what, but I have the hardest time finding mascara that not only looks great but STAYS great. Either it fades away into oblivion after a few hours or migrates en masse to just below my actual eyes, which is a good look if you’re Courtney Love or a raccoon. It seems, however, as though my search for The One has finally come to an end. Only instead of The One, I found… a dynamic duo. I know – kinky. But trust me—short of applying Eva Longoria-style fakies, this is the fullest and flutteriest your lashes are going to get. The recipe: Start with a nice coating of Lancôme's Cils Booster XL Super-Enhancing Mascara Base. I don’t know exactly how it works, but it does – gives you just the boost you need. Follow with a liberal application of their Définicils Pro High Definition Curved Brush Mascara. The thick, curved brush makes an eyelash curler obsolete, and the luxe formula really does go on “smoothly and evenly.” The result: Lashes worth batting. You’ll need to use remover to get clean again – but isn’t it all about staying power anyway? Get yours: Lancome-usa.com And check out our other Lancôme reviews of their best-selling creams and classic makeup.

What: Max Factor Vivid Impact Dual Color High Definition Highlighting Mascara, $10 Why: Read any magazine article about dating, interviewing, or generally making your best impression on people, and the first piece of advice is always the same: eye contact is key. But time is fleeting, and drawing people in with your captivating gaze isn't always as easy as it seems. So making an impact right off the bat is a must. Help your cause along with Max Factor's new Vivid Impact Highlighting Mascara. The name says it all (literally, could they have come up with a more meandering product name?) But in all seriousness, this dual-ended mascara goes way beyond lifting and separating. The mascara end does that, of course, and to great effect (the stiff bristled brush ensures clumps are nothing to bat an eye at), but the real power lies in the highlighting end. The opalescent highlighter complements the mascara shade and gives lashes a little extra oomph in the form of little glints of look-at-me shimmer. Choose black, brown, slate, or daring blue mascara with pink, silver, or champagne shine. One wink will have people lined up wanting to know your secret.

Sorting through the jungle of adjectives that crowd makeup packaging can be daunting. Does it really plump, volumize, lengthen, and add shine? Is there any part of your face or body that can handle all that alteration? Below, we try out three mascaras and figure out whether the words on the tube really do translate.
YSL Everlong Mascara ($27.50) kept its word. The wand, with its nubby plastic bristles, warded off clumps while the mascara itself kept adding eye-defining length to my lashes, coat after coat. Best for: Lengthening
The first coat of Mattese Volumizing and Lengthening Mascara ($5.59) added length, and I thought I might leave it at that. But after waiting for the first coat to dry, a second swipe added a welcome dose of volume to boot. Best for: Lengthening and/or volumizing – keep applying till you're satisfied!
I often have to separate my lashes after applying mascara, but Wet n' Wild Mega Volume Thickening Mascara ($2.99) didn't clump at all. It made my lashes darker and a bit fuller, but I ended up with less volume than might be expected from the enthusiastic name. Best for: Darkening

Nothing says glamour to me like long, lush, gorgeous eye lashes. Apparently, I’m not the only one who thinks so—just open up any fashion magazine or check out pictures of starlets on the red carpet. Until recently, getting my lashes to look like this involved a frustrating hour of applying mascara in front of my smudged bathroom mirror. The great news is that achieving this look is much easier now than ever before. There are some new fabulous products that will get you those “WOW, your lashes look amazing” compliments and make you feel like a celebutante in US Weekly magazine. Some of you may be loyal to your current mascara—devoted, even. Well, even if you are, you can always make it perform better with Shiseido’s Mascara Base ($22). This clear basecoat is a modern day miracle. It boosts volume and length when you use it before your regular mascara.
Current mascara isn’t giving you what you need? Try Covergirl Lash Blast ($7.65). This mascara has such incredible results that it was sold out everywhere within days of being released. For the price, nothing will get your lashes longer or thicker with the staying power of a $$$ product.
Another coveted mascara is Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effet Faux Cils ($27.50). Pricey, but it’s a HG (holy grail) product for many. Bonus: it comes in 6 stunning colors.
Finally, if you have the time or energy, M.A.C. has a huge selection of false eyelashes. All you have to do is trim, glue, then apply to get the most dramatic look of all. Bonus: after purchasing the falsies, a M.A.C artist will apply them for you free of charge. Trust me…if you have time, it is well worth it. Glamour has never been so easy.

What: Maybelline Define-A-Lash, $7 Why: Maybelline Great Lash may be "America's number one mascara," but the company's excellent new Define-A-Lash is set to stage an overthrow. Its tough, spiny brush--while sort of scary at first use--assures a clump-free application and a long, clean look for your lashes. The nifty green color of the tube is an added plus. Allure magazine granted Maybelline's Define-A-Lash this year's Editors' Choice award--and if they love it, so will you. Comes in very black, soft black, and blackish brown. What: Benefit's BADgal Mascara, $19 Why: I've been a loyal user of Dior Diorshow black mascara for the past two years, and I rely on this stuff to get my day started right. So you can imagine my anxiety level shot through the roof when I was applying my makeup in the morning and—gasp!—I'm out of mascara! Last week, that was precisely the horror I was experiencing until I remembered I had backup: Benefit's BADgal rich black mascara. The formula, which is advertised as "a set of sexy black false eyelashes without the glue," proved (nearly) true to its name. Three coats of BADgal later, and my lashes looked just as plump and even as my Diorshow usually makes them. In fact, so good were the results that I still haven't gotten around to picking up a replacement. Backup schmackup. Get Yours: Sephora Check out our guide to the other mascaras we love.
