These skirts give off the feminine vibe of a dress and offer a bit more versatility; tuck in a fitted tank and wear it with pearls to play up the retro cut, or complement the crispness of the color combo with a cropped white jacket. The A-line cuts are flattering and flowing, so your clothes won’t cling on a sticky day.
A bit shorter than the others, this geometric print skirt ($88) has just enough volume to let you move around without looking pouffy.
Lithe’s Right to Roam Skirt ($118) has cute chevron and check embroidery peeking through the strips of black and white.
The slightly slimmer cut of Lafayette 148’s New York Metal Dot Skirt ($348) allows you to wear a longer layer on top.
This cotton skirt ($19.80) has an extra wide waistband, so you can choose to tuck your top in or wear it pulled over the flat front.
The knit waistband on this color block skirt ($218) can be folded over for a lower waistline or worn high for a more dramatic silhouette.

The versatility of this feminine piece places it at the top of my nothing-to-wear outfit list: you can’t really be over- or under-dressed in one of these, and the look is always pulled together and proper. We especially like this one because it won’t look out of place layered with leggings on chilly nights, and it has outstanding desk-to-drinks potential: tuck in a crisp button-down for day and a black sequined tank for night.

Word to the wise: when Polly Blitzer, beauty industry insider, throws a happy hour from 5-8 pm, do NOT show up fashionably late at 7:45. A bouncer will reject you at the door, and you will get in only by begging and promising to be brief. That said, you should definitely wear black and white to such an event--I'm pretty sure I was eventually ushered into the Beauty Blitz Happy Hour this week at New York's W Hotel only because my clothes happened to match the crowd's. With my star-patterned black-and-white skirt, bright blouse, and black short-sleeved cardigan, I was one of six or seven sporting that classic color scheme. So while I didn't have a camera to capture exactly what these trendy fashion mavens were wearing, I did have my trusty journalist's pad to jot down the looks. Here are some of the variations of black and white I managed to glimpse at as the crowd shuffled out:
Stripes have definitely been big for a few seasons now, and this Line sweater ($115) keeps the look interesting with 3/4-length sleeves and boatneck.
Mid-length patterned skirts like this casual MaxMara Adelchi wrap skirt ($490) are one hot commodity. And this great Donna Karan polka-dot skirt ($1,295) with garnish-sleeved blouse ($595) makes for one striking ensemble. It's made modern by the high waist and exposed tulle underlay at the hem. But my favorite outfit of the night was a very simple black dress with just a touch of white detail--the woman wearing it looked so elegant, but stylish at the same time. You can get the same look with this Marc Jacobs crepe tuxedo dress ($995). The bold geometric shapes make the dress a stunner, even in black and white, while the clean lines and thin belt keep it classic.
