3 Tips Tech Experts Swear By For A Longer-Lasting Phone Battery

An Apple iPhone is a must-have for so many — a device that some can’t see themselves living or working without. And for the most part, we can only marvel at its many functions and features and at how, for example, it has more or less replaced cameras and video recorders for a number of users. But one common complaint you may hear (or may be experiencing yourself) is that the iPhone’s battery doesn’t last as long as it should. If you find yourself reaching for a charger way too often, these three tips tech experts swear by for a longer-lasting phone battery are for you. 

“Apple is known for its seamless integration of both hardware and software by creating a system that can harmoniously collaborate these two elements,” said Matt Payne, CEO of Width.ai. “Luckily, this hardware-software teamwork also benefits iPhone’s battery.” Here are Payne’s three favorite phone battery tips. 

Turn on the Optimized Battery Charging

There is a setting in your iPhone where it can help reduce your iPhone’s battery aging by learning your charging and discharging patterns from your daily charging routine then adjust or “optimize” the charging process accordingly, according to Payne. “This helps you charge your iPhone up to 80% (the optimum level) until you need to use it,” Payne said. “In order to enable it, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Toggle “Optimized Battery Charging” on.”

Discharge to 20% Charge to 80%

“Follow the 20% rule for lithium-ion batteries,” Payne said. “Use and discharge your phone up to 20% battery and then recharge it up to 20% less than its full charge which is simply 80%. This can avoid putting so much stress on the battery since discharging the battery up to too low a level and fully charging it up frequently can strain the battery and affect the overall battery life expectancy.”

Any li-ion battery when discharged too low will be forced to squeeze out more of its stored ions to bring out power, conversely, charging it past 90% is also forcing more ions to squeeze into an already near-full container, Payne added. 

Calibrate your battery

“I said earlier that discharging and charging from 20% to 80% is the optimum level to keep your battery healthy — however, it is important to calibrate your battery too,” Payne said. “In order to do this, use your iPhone until it is drained and shut itself down. Plug it in a charger, and when it automatically turns on, turn it off immediately and let it charge for around two hours or until you estimate it already reaches 100%. This can recalibrate your battery and help your software to have data on the 0-100% charging process. Do this every 6 months and not frequently so that it will not hurt your battery instead of helping it preserve its life.”
