Our latest edition of “You’re Doing It Wrong” is more like a PSA on behalf of all the leather and faux leather clothing in your closet: stop ruining it! If you own at least one leather skirt or pair of pants, you must read this hack for how to store them in your closet without causing damage to them (because we know you paid enough for those Paige Denim pants and you want them to last more than one season.)
The problem: You need you to hang your leather in the closet (duh, where else would it go?), but you don’t want to fold it in half and hang it on a pants hanger because that causes an awkward horizontal crease, and the teeth on clip hangers cause indentations and sometimes even punctures holes in the fabric. Yikes!
Solution: Take a cue from hair stylists who use playing cards under clips to prevent unwanted crimps (a backstage beauty secret!), and apply the same logic to hanging your leather.
Step 1: Steal 2 playing cards from the deck (the Jokers are fine if your husband needs the full deck for Friday night poker.)
Step 2: Folding the card in half, place it between the hanger clips and the item of clothing you are hanging. Or use one playing card in the front and one in the back of the garment.
Step 3: Voila! Your garment is ready for safe storing.
