Surprisingly, it all started with
Free People, which was created by
Richard Hayne and his first wife,
Judy Wick, and business partner (and Hayne’s old roommate)
Scott Belair. The first
Free People store opened in 1970.
Due to political issues at the time,
Free People's name was changed to
Urban Outfitters in 1975.
Eventually, Haynes brought
Free People back while keeping
Urban Outfitters retail stores. In addition, he created
Anthropologie in 1992. This is why Urban Outfitters is the parent company for
Anthro.

The name
Anthropologie is a spin on the founder's college degree.
Richard Hayne graduated from Lehigh University in 1969 with a degree in anthropology, and the store is named after his major in French.

Window displays at
Anthropologie are either recycled and reused or donated to charity. Since the window display rotate every 6 to 8 weeks, and the interior displays are rotated more often than that, once a display’s time is up, it either goes into storage to be used again or is auctioned off for charity. For example, when butterflies created for the Greenville, N.C. store’s Earth Day celebration were sold, the proceeds were used to plant new trees.
