Perhaps you already know your way around a phone that refuses to keep its charge for very long. If this is one of your biggest tech challenges in life, you’ve probably already tried everything under the sun to boost your battery power. You’ve swapped cheap chargers and cables for Apple-certified alternatives. You may have quit your previous habit of charging your phone overnight in favor of more frequent daytime charges that keep it maintained in the sweet spot — 30 to 80 percent charged. These are both excellent tech habits to adopt and you’re well on your way to a longer-lasting battery.

But it may not be enough. There are a few unexpected iPhone mistakes that people make that could be contributing to a dwindling battery — and you may not even be aware of them (yet). Tech Expert CJ Xia at Boster Biological Technology describes two unexpected iPhone mistakes that ruin battery power — but (good news!) are within your control to quickly fix.

Using Social Media on Your iPhone

Using social media apps is so much more convenient than logging onto your laptop and accessing them the “old-fashioned” way, we get it. But in doing so you are likely visiting them far more often than you normally would and are causing your battery to rapidly decrease.

“Using Social Media apps especially Facebook can ruin your iPhone’s,” Xia says. “When using Facebook, your iPhone’s performance may suffer and the battery life will decrease. If you frequently check Facebook, you may have noticed that it seems like there’s always something new on your NewsFeed due to all the notifications and app refreshes the app undergoes. Turning off background app refresh and unused Facebook alerts will help you avoid Facebook’s negative effects on your phone’s performance and battery life. Your iPhone will become noticeably quicker as a result of this.”

Disable Report Background Activity

Recent iPhone models have a Low Power Mode that may be activated by disabling the one configurable parameter, Report Background Activity, according to Xia. “When batteries aren’t performing as expected, this is a fantastic way to give them a boost,” Xia says. “This option, when enabled, lets you use the Apple Pencil and a keyboard with your device even while it’s turned off. As a result, your battery may die more quickly than usual.”

Disabling it activates the Smart Power Mode and enhances the battery life of iPhones, Xia confirms. “Therefore, the major setting to disable in order to improve or raise iPhone battery life is the Report Background Activity, which reduces energy consumption by turning off tracking of all actions on the iPhone,” Xia says. “Disabling this setting improves app closing while the iPhone is closed and, in conjunction with the battery performance optimization settings, provides the best result through invisible minimized activities.”

Changing the tech habits that you already know can cause battery drainage is a super-smart idea. But sometimes the settings and habits we don’t expect are affecting battery can be the biggest drainage culprits of all.
