3 Browsing Mistakes That Security Experts Warn Are Putting Your Personal Data At Risk

Browsing the internet when you have free time may be an action you don’t think twice about. But scrolling isn’t so simple when you start to consider how a few mistakes can compromise your privacy and personal data. Whether your days are spent working from a coffee shop or at home, it’s worth keeping a few important browsing tips in mind to stay as safe as possible.
“As we browse the internet, we often unknowingly put our personal data at risk through various browsing mistakes,” says Shahnawaz Sadique, the tech expert and founder of TheViralPink.Com. “Here are three common browsing mistakes that security experts warn are putting your personal data at risk.”
Clicking on suspicious linksOne of the most common browsing mistakes is clicking on suspicious links, Sadique warns. “These links can be embedded in emails, social media posts, or pop-up ads,” Sadique says. “Clicking on these links can lead to malware downloads, phishing attacks, or other security threats.”
When you click on a suspicious link, you may be redirected to a website that installs malware on your device, or you may be prompted to enter personal information into a phishing website, Sadique explains — and this can lead to identity theft, financial fraud, or other security breaches.
“To prevent this from happening, be cautious when clicking on links, especially from unfamiliar sources,” Sadique says. “Check the URL to make sure it’s legitimate and avoid clicking on links that seem too good to be true. Use an anti-virus software that can detect and block malicious links, and keep your software up-to-date with the latest security patches.”
Using weak passwordsAnother browsing mistake that puts personal data at risk is using weak passwords. “Weak passwords are easily guessable or can be cracked through brute force attacks,” Sadique says. “This allows cybercriminals to gain access to sensitive data, including bank accounts, email accounts, and other personal information.”
After cybercriminals crack weak passwords, they can then use these passwords to gain access to your accounts and personal information. “To prevent this from happening, use strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts,” Sadique says. “Avoid using dictionary words, personal information, or easily guessable passwords such as “12345” or “password.” Consider using a password manager to generate and store strong passwords securely.”
Not using a virtual private network (VPN)Using a VPN is super important if you browse at public venues. “When we browse the internet, we often do so on public Wi-Fi networks, such as those in coffee shops or airports,” Sadique says. “However, these networks are often unsecured, and cybercriminals can intercept data transmitted over them. Not using a VPN can put personal data at risk.”
When you use public Wi-Fi networks, Sadique warns your data is transmitted over an unsecured network that cybercriminals can intercept. This can lead to data breaches and identity theft. “To prevent this from happening, use a virtual private network (VPN) when browsing on public Wi-Fi networks,” Sadique says, explaining that a VPN encrypts your internet connection, making it more difficult for cybercriminals to intercept your data. Sadique’s advice is to look for a reputable VPN provider with strong encryption and a no-logs policy.
“In summary, to keep yourself safer while browsing the internet, avoid clicking on suspicious links, use strong passwords, and use a VPN when browsing on public Wi-Fi networks,” Sadique says. “Additionally, keep your software and anti-virus software up-to-date and be cautious when sharing personal information online. By following these best practices, you can reduce the risk of personal data breaches and keep your personal data safe while browsing the internet.”
