Whether it’s due to a lack of nutrients, damage from heat, or plain old aging, there’s a myriad of reasons you may be dealing with thinning hair. While this issue is frustrating and can cause a serious blow to your confidence, the good thing is that there are plenty of solutions! From supplements to serums, there are so many products out there that can help your hair stay happy and healthy—but which ones are essential if you’re experiencing hair loss?
To answer this question, we checked in with professional hairstylist Lauren Udoh, Hair Creative Director of Wig Reports. Udoh gave us the rundown on her top three haircare products that every woman over 40 should be using to combat and prevent thinning hair. Find all of her advice below!
#1: Protein-Based Shampoo And Conditioner
Proteins like keratin and biotin are essential to the health of your hair, which is why Udoh says your haircare routine should start with a great protein-based shampoo and conditioner if you want to put an end to thinning locks.
"A protein-based shampoo and conditioner are essential for thinning hair because they will help to strengthen the hair shaft and fill in any weak spots," she explains. "Look for a shampoo and conditioner containing keratin or biotin, both known for their hair-strengthening properties."
Bonus tip: In addition to using these ingredients on your scalp, it can be helpful to take supplements like biotin in order to strength your hair from the inside out!
#2: Volume-Boosting Shampoo
In addition to ensuring your shampoo contains the proteins your hair loves, Udoh says you should incorporate volume-boosting varieties into your routine to combat signs of thinning and hair loss. Products specifically designed to add some umph to your tresses are key!
"Volume-boosting shampoos are ideal for thinning hair because they will help to add thickness and body to the strands," Udoh notes. There are plenty of options out there; she says you should just keep an eye out for shampoos that are labeled with words like "volumizing" and "thickening." Noted!
#3: A Heat-Protectant Spray
Combatting thinning hair isn't just about fixing the issue; it's also about preventing it by ensuring your hair resists potential damage. That's why you should always use some sort of heat-protectant product, such as a spray, before styling your hair with heat.
"Heating tools, such as blow dryers and curling irons, can take a toll on thinning hair, so it’s important to use a heat protectant spray before using any hot tools," Udoh stresses. "The spray will help to protect your hair from the heat, which will help keep it healthy and prevent further damage." Got it!
Of course, the perfect haircare routine for you and your locks will depend on your personal needs. However, when it comes to preventing and combatting thinning hair, you certainly can't go wrong with these expert tips from Udoh. "Using these products regularly will help to keep your hair healthy and looking its best," she concludes.
