Charging your phone doesn’t take skill or special tech know-how. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a right and a wrong way to do it. And when you charge your phone the wrong way, you not only negatively affect how much charging power it gets, but you also could be causing your phone longer term damage, especially when it comes to your battery.

It’s easy to make iPhone charging mistakes, but it’s even easier to correct them. Start by reversing these three iPhone mistakes that are very common and can ruin your iPhone in so many ways.

Using Non-Apple Chargers and Accessories

One of the most important charging tips for your iPhone is to make sure the charging cables and accessories that you use are Apple-certified. Using a non-Apple, cheaper cable, for example, can deliver the wrong amount of charging power, which can cause your phone battery to overheat. Heat and a phone battery do NOT mix. Spend a few more dollars if possible to upgrade your accessories and charge your phone safely.

Charging Your Phone In A Hot Room

Extreme temperatures — whether too hot or too cold — are dangerous for your phone’s battery. If you are routinely charging your device in a very hot room, the added heat on top of a process (charging) that already heats up your battery can cause your battery to degrade. Make sure you only charge your device in a room temperature space.

Using Public Charging Stations

If you absolutely must use a public charging station, once in a blue moon, you should be fine. But relying on them to charge your device more than on occasion is opening you up to the possibility of getting hacked and having your data and private information stolen. If you plan to be out for awhile, make a plan to charge your phone at home before you leave or in the car.

These three mistakes can affect your phone battery over time, but they’re also easily avoidable.
