You’ve changed your pillowcase to a satin option that doesn’t crease your skin and you’re carefully getting at least seven hours of rest every night — go you! You’re well on your way toward healthier skin that looks even better during the day, thanks to great nighttime skincare habits. But don’t give up all of that goodness the moment your alarm blares. Your morning skin routine counts too and will set the stage for achieving clearer, glowier skin. If you’re making any of these three morning mistakes that dermatologists warn may lead to wrinkles you are “sleeping” on additional opportunities to protect, smoothen, and brighten your skin.

But here’s the good news: you can easily fix these mistakes today and doing so won’t break the bank. Read on to find out if you’re making common skincare morning mistakes.

You’re Not Moisturizing

At some point in the last few years a rumor took over that it’s total nonsense to wash your face in the morning — after all, how much dirt and oil can your skin possibly accumulate while you’re sleeping soundly? Sure, there’s a little truth to the idea that you should focus your most intense cleaning at the end of the day, a time when you’ll be removing makeup as well. But that doesn’t mean you should neglect your morning skincare routine. And a major part of that routine is adding moisture back into your skin so that it’s hydrated and smooth.

“If you don’t moisturize your skin in the morning, it can become dry and irritated — and more susceptible to wrinkles,” said Dr. Anju Methil, MBBS, DVD, MD – Dermatology and Cosmetology at ClinicSpots. “Be sure to apply a moisturizer that suits your skin type every morning after cleansing and applying sunscreen.”

You’re Skipping Sunscreen

And while we’re on the topic: if you’re skipping sunscreen in the morning you are exposing your skin to one of the number one causes of wrinkles and fine lines: UV light.

“Not wearing sunscreen is one of the worst things you can do for your skin,” Dr. Methil said. “UV rays from the sun can damage the skin and lead to premature aging, including wrinkles. Be sure to apply sunscreen every day, even if you’re just going to be inside all day.”

Your best bet is to find a sunscreen with SPF 30+ that is formulated with zinc oxide. And remember to apply it even on cloudy days — UV rays can still poke through clouds.

You’re Sleeping With Makeup On

So, technically this is a nighttime tip, but it’s one worth noting because making this mistake can affect your morning: no matter how tired you are the night before, always remove all of your makeup before hitting the sheets.

“Sleeping with your makeup on is another common morning mistake that can lead to wrinkles,” Dr. Methil said. “Makeup can clog your pores and cause irritation, leading to inflammation and wrinkles. Always make sure to remove your makeup before going to bed.”

What Are Some Great Morning Skincare Habits?

Now that you’re clear on what NOT to do in the morning for better skin, what should you be doing?

“First, wash your face with a gentle cleanser,” Dr. Methil said. “Use warm water and massage the cleanser into your skin for at least 30 seconds before rinsing it off. This will help remove any dirt or oil that has built up overnight. Next, apply a toner to your face. This will help balance the pH of your skin and prepare it for the rest of your skincare routine. Be sure to use a toner that is appropriate for your skin type. Finally, apply a moisturizer to your face. This will help hydrate your skin and protect it from the elements. Be sure to use a moisturizer that is appropriate for your skin type. Finally don’t forget to use sunscreen.”

Mornings are hectic, we get it. But it takes just a few minutes and a few good tips on what not to do to get even more beautiful skin that’s protected and ready to face the day.
