Is there anything more frustrating than dealing with a super-slow phone? You’ve paid good money for your device and pay enough each month for service. You may even be on top of the apps that you download and those you avoid because they are known battery suckers. But sometimes you can’t avoid the inevitable slow-down that happens — with both iPhones and Android phones.
In the case of your Android, there are three big reasons why your phone could be experiencing a slow-down, according to Tech Expert Kay Velik at Nine Peaks Media. And the good news is: you can fix all three of these problems.
Insufficient Storage Space
One of the most common culprits behind a sluggish Android device is insufficient storage space, according to Velik. “When your device’s internal storage is nearly full, it can significantly impact its performance,” Velik says. “This is because Android needs a certain amount of free space to operate smoothly.”
To fix this issue, start by deleting unnecessary apps and clearing out cached data. Velik says you can also transfer large files and media to an external storage device or cloud storage service to free up space.
Too Many Background Processes
If you’re asking your Android to work hard, you have to expect that it’s going to tax its battery at some point. “Another reason for your Android's slowdown could be the presence of too many background processes running simultaneously,” Velik says. “These processes consume valuable system resources, leading to decreased performance. To address this, go to your device's Settings and navigate to the Apps section. From there, you can force stop any unnecessary background processes or even uninstall apps that you no longer use. Additionally, consider disabling auto-sync and app notifications for apps that constantly run in the background.”
Outdated Software and Firmware
Make sure your software is always up to date to avoid phone speed problems.
“Outdated software and firmware can also contribute to a sluggish Android device,” Velik says. “Manufacturers regularly release updates that optimize system performance and fix bugs.. If you haven't updated your device's software or firmware in a while, it's high time you do so.”
Check for updates by going to Settings -> System -> Software Update and follow the prompts to download and install the latest updates available for your device. This should help improve its overall speed and performance.
