Incorporating the right herbs and spices into your diet can significantly enhance your health, particularly when it comes to reducing inflammation, improving digestion, and achieving a flatter belly. Many of these natural ingredients have been used for centuries in traditional medicine for their powerful anti-inflammatory and digestive properties. By adding these flavorful and health-boosting herbs and spices to your meals, you can support weight loss and promote better overall digestion.

We checked in with Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD, registered nurse Lauren Thayer, and Dr. Michael O. McKinney, MD, nutrition specialist, to learn about four spices and herbs to add to your meals because they can aid in a flatter belly and have digestive benefits. They revealed that ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, and garlic are the ones to use more of. Read on to find out why.

1. Ginger

Ginger contains bioactive compounds like gingerol, which have potent anti-inflammatory properties. By reducing inflammation in the gut, ginger can help alleviate symptoms of digestive discomfort and bloating, contributing to a flatter belly.

Best says, "Ginger may help alleviate symptoms due to its ability to reduce inflammation and promote healthy digestion." She adds, "Ginger has been found to have natural antispasmodic properties, which may help relax the muscles in the digestive tract and reduce bloating caused by muscle contractions."

2. Turmeric

Turmeric has antimicrobial properties that help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria. A balanced gut microbiome is crucial for overall digestive health and can prevent issues like gas and bloating. Turmeric can improve the function of the gut barrier, which enhances the absorption of nutrients. Better nutrient absorption supports overall health and can prevent digestive discomfort. Additionally, curcumin can enhance metabolic processes, helping the body burn calories more efficiently. An increased metabolic rate aids in weight loss by promoting the burning of fat.

Thayer highlights that "curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, is known for its metabolism-boosting properties, as well as other anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties."

3. Cinnamon

Cinnamon helps stabilize blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity. Stable blood sugar levels can reduce cravings and prevent overeating, which supports weight management and helps maintain a flatter belly.

"Not only is cinnamon a tasty spice, but it’s also an anti-inflammatory agent. It helps control blood sugar levels, which can help prevent insulin spikes and consequent belly fat storage. Also, by stimulating gastric juices, it helps digestion while aiding the breakdown of food, which reduces digestive problems, thus enhancing gut health," says McKinney.

4. Garlic

The anti-inflammatory properties of garlic can help reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. This can alleviate digestive discomfort and contribute to a healthier gut environment. It's also been shown to increase metabolic rate, which can aid in weight management.

"Garlic has sulfur compounds like allicin, which are strong anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agents. These compounds reduce gut inflammation, fight off harmful bacteria, and promote healthy gut flora," says McKinney. "Due to its positive effects on digestion and nutrient absorption, garlic can indirectly facilitate weight management as well as lead to a flatter belly by promoting optimal gut health."
