If there’s one makeup takeaway we will take from the last few years and carry into the next few years, it’s not that contour makeup is necessary or that we should be overfilling our lips with gusto — it’s that eyebrows make a huge impact on our overall look and should not be neglected. Whether you’ve let yours grow out and become a little bushy, or are still cursing the early aughts, when you tweezed them into oblivion, you may know that the impact brows can make includes helping you look more youthful or more chic, depending on the direction you want to take your look.

But, as with all makeup products, makeup mistakes happen to brows, too. When they happen, they have the power to change your appearance in ways you probably didn’t anticipate, and not all for the better. If you would like to achieve a more youthful look, your brow makeup routine can help. But these are the brow mistakes you should avoid at all costs — because they can make you look older.

Trying to Make Brows Identical

There are one too many videos online that emphasize the importance of facial symmetry. Sure, a more symmetrical face looks balanced and harmonious, but the little differences that you have in your face also create character. Brows are one of those facial features that should not be identical — the expression that they are “cousins” and not “sisters” reigns true here. If you’re taking a tweezer to your brows, be careful not to become too focused on making them cookie cutter versions of one another. The result could actually be more uncanny valley than natural.

Not Tinting Your Brows

If your eyebrows have become a bit grayer in the last few years, it’s entirely up to you if you want to tint them or leave them be. But tinting them in a shade that is close to your natural brow color can make you appear years younger, and it will also eliminate the need to spend so much find filling in gaps with a brow pencil — it’s a win-win.

Making Your Brows Too Dark or Too Light

While we’re on the topic of tinting your brows, it’s important to choose a shade that resembles your natural hair color or brow color (which could be different than your hair shade). A too-dark brow can look heavy on the face and drag it down, making it appear older than it is. And a too-light shade can make your features fade into the background.

Using Brow Stencils

No two eyebrows are alike — so when you are relying on cookie cutter eyebrow stencils to groom yours, they could come out appearing less than natural. Even if you love a super-high arch on someone else, for example, it doesn’t mean that high arch best suits your face. Nature has given you the perfect eyebrow shape for your facial features and following it may look best.

If you have neglected your brows for a long time, making an appointment with a professional for your inaugural brow wax and tint may be the best move. From there, you can invest in a few makeup tools, like a brow pencil, brow gel, and a spoolie, and easily stick to a brow makeup routine that elevates your look.
