Have you ever noticed that you can be getting the same haircut for years and years, but the moment you switch to a new hairstylist, they can sometimes put their own spin on your ‘do and turn it into something even more fabulous? You don’t necessarily have to switch up your hairstyle completely (unless you want to) to see a huge different in how your skin and hair look. Subtle tweaks to your short or long style — including adding strategic layers that highlight your cheekbones and eyes — can provide amazing gains. Whether you are struggling to find a style that makes your thinning hair look healthier or you just feel like your current style is highlighting all of the wrong features on your face, one hair stylist says these are the four haircuts to avoid if you want to appear more modern — and the simple and subtle haircut changes that can make all of the difference.
Which haircuts can accentuate signs of aging?
If one of your hair goals is to find a haircut and style that softens your face and makes you appear fresher and more youthful, the cuts to avoid include anything too extreme. This can mean anything too blunt, too short, or even too long.
“I do not recommend hairstyles such as extreme pixies, bowl cuts, or overly long layered haircuts if aging is a concern,” says Hair Expert and Stylist Lauren Udoh, the hair creative director of WigReports.com. “These cuts can accentuate any loss of volume and texture in the hair over time by making it appear thinner and emphasizing wrinkles and sagging of the facial features.”
The problem with many of these cuts is that they introduce harsh lines to your hair and face, which doesn’t allow for movement and softness. The upside here is that you don’t have to say “no” to classic bobs or even pixies. And, yes, you can certainly grow your hair longer than shoulder length if that’s your style of choice. The trick is to find a hair stylist that provides subtle layers and creates a bit of texture to make thinning hair look more voluminous and healthy.
Which haircuts do you recommend instead?
Udoh says she recommends a short bob with bangs or a classic shag to add some dimension without detracting from natural beauty. “These haircuts will help to create the illusion of volume and texture without adding too much bulk or length that may accentuate signs of aging,” Udoh says. “I also suggest soft layers that brush your cheekbones as they can draw attention away from the jawline while still maintaining an age-appropriate look. A low-maintenance cut such as pixie or blunt lob is ideal for those looking for an easy style with minimal upkeep.”
There are so many gorgeous haircut options available to women of all ages, and age should not dictate the length of your hair or the style you choose. But with a few minor tweaks, these styles can look less harsh and more modern, giving your hair a healthier appearance and voluminous boost.
