4 Mistakes You’re Making That Age Your Hands Faster

April 6, 2017 by Jennifer Hussein

As you get older, every inch of your body starts to age faster and faster. One body part that ages the quickest is our hands.

Your hands go through daily wear and tear that make them age at a faster pace than other parts of your body and they should be taken care of properly to keep them happy and healthy. Here are some major mistakes you’re probably making that are making your hands look older than you are!

Age spots actually have little to do with your age. According to dermatologist Eileen Lambroza, MD they’re actually created by sun exposure. If you frequently tan, you’re putting yourself at risk for more age spots! Try using a hand cream that contains SPF 30 to keep your hands guarded against sun damage.

Dry hands are not only unappealing, they’re painful and itchy! If your hands are dry and irritated, you’re probably not moisturizing them enough. Hydrating your skin is crucial to keeping them soft and smooth, giving them a younger look. Try using hand cream multiple times a day to keep your hands moisturized and hydrated.

That black nail polish may look nice, but it’s not doing any good to your natural nails. Wearing dark nail polish can actually stain your nails, making them discolored and unhealthy looking. To get rid of this discoloration, rub your nails with a lemon wedge or soak them in denture cleaner for 15 minutes.

Something as simple as an outdated manicure can make your hands look aged. Long nails can make your hands look old and witch-like, so make sure you keep them a little short, but not too short to the point that they look bitten off.

Jan Arnold, owner of nail care company CND, recommends keeping your nails no longer than ¼ inch beyond your fingertips. Also, using a bold nail polish distracts from wrinkles and aging hands, so try a shade like purple or red instead of classic French tips.
