We get it: hair loss and shedding is a frightening reality for a lot of us. Whether the cause is stress, genetics, or a medical condition, it’s daunting to see strands of hair on your brush or in the shower. You may wonder when it’s going to stop and how bad it’s going to get. Maybe you’ve loaded up your medicine cabinet with bottles of biotin and any gummy you can find on the market that claims it can help with hair loss. Even though your first best step should be visiting a dermatologist to talk about your concerns and get a professional opinion on your hair loss, natural remedies can also provide some relief. Dr. Harikiran Chekuri, MBBS, MS, Hair transplant specialist & medical head at ClinicSpots, recommends these four natural remedies for hair loss.

Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds are an ancient remedy used to promote hair growth, Dr. Chekuri explains, and one that can be taken as a supplement or applied topically to the hair and scalp.

“Fenugreek contains several vitamins and minerals that can help to promote hair growth,” Dr. Chekuri  says. “It also contains alkaline salts and amino acids which are helpful for hair growth. Fenugreek can be applied topically to the scalp as a shampoo or a conditioner. It also can be mixed with other natural ingredients such as lemon juice to promote better absorption. Fenugreek can also be taken as a supplement. It should be taken at least three times per week to be effective.”

Indian Gooseberry

“Indian gooseberry or amla has been used for centuries in South Asia as a hair remedy,” Dr. Chekuri  says. “It can be taken as a supplement or applied topically to the hair and scalp to promote hair growth. Indian gooseberry is rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C is helpful for promoting hair growth. It also contains other minerals and vitamins that are helpful for healthy hair. Indian gooseberry can be applied topically to the scalp as a shampoo or conditioner. It can also be mixed with other ingredients and applied to the scalp as a paste.”

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto (which is an ingredient you’ll actually find in many popular hair supplements) is another natural substance that is often used to treat issues that lead to hair loss. “It is most effective against androgenic alopecia, which is the most common type of hair thinning and hair loss,” Dr. Chekuri  says. “Saw palmetto can also be used as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition that leads to pain, burning and urination problems. It works against hair loss by lowering the amount of androgen in your system and reducing inflammation in your body. It is often combined with other ingredients for maximum effectiveness, such as cysteine, biotin and zinc.”

Egg And Orange Mask

Lastly, a natural hair loss remedy that you can probably found in your fridge right this moment: an egg and orange mask that is applied topically to the hair and scalp. “Eggs are one of the best sources of protein,” Dr. Chekuri says. “Besides, orange is rich in Vitamin C which is good for your hair. This can be a great hair mask that you can make at home. Mix the yolk of an egg and the juice of one orange. You can leave the mixture on your hair for about 30 minutes, and then wash it off. It can help reduce hair fall and promote new hair growth.”

As a reminder, always visit a doctor first before starting any new regimen, including a natural one. Getting more insight on the cause of your hair loss can help you find a more targeted solution that’s right for you.
