People call breakfast the most important meal of the day for a reason. It sets the tone for your diet for the rest of the day. Plus, an unhealthy breakfast can make it difficult to make healthier choice later. In fact, according to Healthline, high sugar breakfasts (like high sugar breakfast cereals) can lead to blood sugar and insulin level spikes: “A few hours later, your blood sugar may crash, and your body will crave another high-carb meal or snack–potentially creating a vicious cycle of overeating.”

Keep reading to find out the unexpected breakfast foods you should stop eating because they lead to weight gain!

cereal

Cereal

Popular breakfast cereals can be high in sugar and lack fiber and protein. With that in mind, it's important to read the nutrition labels whenever you are purchasing cereal. Even options that might seem healthy could be packing in tons of sugar.

yogurt

Sweetened Yogurt

Yogurt is another food that is often considered a healthy breakfast choice. However, it might be doing more harm than good. Sweetened yogurts can be high in sugar. They are also less likely to keep you full than greek yogurt.

With that in mind, choosing greek yogurt and then topping it with your favorite fruit and some honey for sweetness is a healthier choice.

granola

Granola

Granola is a popular topping on smoothies and yogurt, and granola bars are a popular on-the-go breakfast choice. Unfortunately, it's not as healthy as you might think.

Granola is often high in sugar and calories. With that in mind, avoiding it altogether or experimenting with ways of making it yourself (and making it with healthier choices in mind) are both good ideas.

muffins

Muffins

Muffins are often considered a healthy breakfast option. Unfortunately, they are often high in calories, fat, and sugar--making them more like dessert than breakfast. With that in mind, if you are trying to keep an eye on your weight, keep the muffins in moderation.
