Mistakes happen — sometimes often — when it comes to makeup application. And, unfortunately, it can take very little in the way of mistakes to ruin your entire look. Simply by applying a little too much eyeliner in one place or a little too much blush a little too low on your face, you can create a look that you weren’t after at all. Little mistakes and little application successes all make a big difference when it comes to cosmetics.

But why does it seem like these mistakes are even more evident as we get older? It can feel like it’s easier than ever to commit major makeup mistakes. The good news is that help is just around the corner – and it takes nothing but a few good tips and knowledge to correct errors.

From eyeliner mishaps to lips and brows, here are the five biggest makeup mistakes and their solutions.

Poor Eyeliner Technique

Wrong way: Don’t apply your eyeliner like a 20-year-old. Meaning: try to keep in mind that mature lids can often show signs of creasing and can be a bit droopier. If you apply your winged eyeliner thick and extend it all the way to the outer corner of your eye, you can add to this droopiness. And if you’re using a harsh black liner, the effect can be more aging.

Right way: Take your finger and make your lid taut. Draw a line above your last eyelash using a brown eyeliner. Create a triangle and drag your eyeliner inward until you reach the center of your eye. This technique gives the eye lift.

Going All The Way In With Eyeliner

Wrong way: When you apply eyeliner to the inner corner of your eye, it can get mixed up with creases and wrinkles you have on your inner lid.

Right way: don’t drag your eyeliner all the way to the inner corner of your eye. Instead, stop your liner at the center of the top lash. This opens up your eye area and makes eyes look bigger.

Overlining Your Lips

Wrong way: “old lady mouth” is achieved when you line your lips all around and overline them. Lining the corners of your lips is a no-no if your goal is a fresher look. Over the course of the day, this liner can easily become lost in the creases of your mouth.

Right way: Line your cupid’s bow and the bottom of your lip, but stop before you get to the corners of your lips. Top it off with a light-colored lipstick and a bit of gloss in the center of your lips.

Not Blending Foundation

Wrong way: Foundation can create a gorgeous base and help make your skin glow. But only if you blend it properly — and that includes making sure you blend it down to your neck.

Right way: Grab a fluffy makeup brush and go to town blending your foundation so that it is applied to your neck, as well. If you’re wearing something low-cut, don’t forget to blend your makeup down to your chest, as well.

Forgetting Your Eyebrows

Wrong way: Your brows are an important facial feature that provides balance to your entire face. Yet, they are often an afterthought when we’re applying makeup. You don’t have to stand in front of a mirror constantly tweezing your brows for them to look their best, but a little liner or shadow to fill in sparse areas can make a big difference.

Right way: Start off by positioning an eyebrow pencil in a shade that matches your brows from the corner of your nose to the corner of your eye — this is the ideal place to start making up your brows. From here, fill in any sparse areas of your brow. Finish off with a clear gel to keep brows in place.
