There’s a good reason why so many eyeshadow compacts still include an illustration of an eye on the back, along with tips on where to apply each shade: it’s one makeup product that some of us still haven’t mastered. It can feel like you need the skills of a professional makeup artist to make shadow work, not to mention the additional know-how of a trained artist who can tell their nudes from their rose-nudes. But the truth is: you can slay your shadow, too. All you need is a few good tips and tricks, especially if your goal is to look younger with makeup. Jenny Stokes, founder and CEO at MinimalJapan, spoke with SHEFinds.com about the six life-changing eyeshadow hacks that will make you look six years younger.
“For beauty experts like me, make-up can emphasize your best features and when done right, take years off your face,” Stokes says. “Eye makeup can be quite tricky, especially if you have areas you need to correct, but with these hacks, you’ll be applying eyeshadow like a pro.”
Concealer
“To look younger and fresher, apply concealer to dark areas around your eyes,” Stoke says. “Choose a shade or 2 lighter and apply to the inner corners of your eyes as these tend to darken first.”
Eye Primer
“To help your eyeshadow stay in place, apply eye primer to your lids,” Stokes says. “Eye primer can make your eye makeup look flawless, and can be used to cover up mistakes.”
Less Is More
“Sweep a nude eyeshadow for day makeup, and for nights, apply a slightly darker shade to the crease to add definition to the eyes,” Stokes says. “Avoid using eyeliner and don’t apply eyeshadow to your brow bone as this can add years to your face.”
Eyeliner
“If you can’t do away with eyeliner, choose a softer brown color,” Stokes says. “You can also use a dark eyeshadow and dab it on the outer corners of your eyes with a makeup brush.”
Lower Lids
Don’t neglect your lower lids. “Opening up your eyes can give you a modern, youthful look,” Stokes says. “Apply the darkest shade in your eye palette to the lower lid just below the lashes and soften the look with a make-up brush.”
Know Your Colors
“Opt for lighter colors for your eyelids and around your eyes,” Stokes says. “Highlighting the corners of your eyes with light shimmer makes your eyes look brighter and fresh.”
