6 Perks Of Having Brown Hair (Brunettes, Rejoice!)

In almost every fairytale and popular movie, it's always the same story: blondes are the women who get to have all the fun and enjoy attention and the flattery of both men and other women. And yes, blonde hair is beautiful, but the perks of being a sultry, sophisticated brunette cannot be overstated. All hair colors have their own sets of pro and cons, but Vincent Sideli at Yves Durif in New York City, points out 6 special perks of having brown hair.

Brown hair will save you both money and time.

Anyone who has ever committed herself to red or bleached blonde hair knows all too well that regular touch-ups become so necessary you'll need a separate budget just for coloring. "Having brown hair means less money and time spent on going to the salon for highlights and/or bleaching," Sideli says. "Brunettes are also able to find color matches more easily and don't need to dye their hair as frequently as their other color counterparts."

Your hair is probably thicker.

Natural blondes actually have more hair than brunettes and redheads, but those of us with dark hair usually have coarser and thicker hair than our flaxen sisters. Make the most out of your thick brown hair by opting for cuts that show off volume, such as a layered snip with sides-wept bangs or a layered lob.

You can get away with fewer shampoos.

If you've got brown hair, there's a good chance you're not a slave to daily shampoos and damaging heating tools. "It’s easier to tell if you have greasy hair when you have lighter hair," Sideli says. "Being a brunette, you can get away with not washing your hair for a couple of days."

Your hair is super shiny.

Dark hair reflects light much better than blonde hair, which is why brunettes typically boast glossier, shinier strands. Keep brown hair looking its best by giving it an occasional apple cider vinegar boost: simply mix 3/4 cups of apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup of water and an optional drop or two of lavender oil. Apply the mixture to clean hair and allow it to work its magic--no rinsing necessary.

Your hair is less damaged.

If you suffer from split or frayed ends, only a good haircut will repair the damage--but the next best thing you can do is go a shade or two darker to minimize the appearance of unhealthy hair. "It's much healthier to be an unnatural brunette than an unnatural blonde," Sideli says. "Bleaching your hair lighter can cause serious damage to your hair, unlike dark dyes."

You can wear anything.

There are so many rules when it comes to what you can and can not wear as a blonde or brunette. No yellow, no red, no pink, and even black can look extreme with pale skin and light hair. But, for brunettes, shopping is a lot easier. With the exception of dull beige hues and some browns, there are a range of clothing and makeup shades that look incredible with brunette hair. From bright jewel colors to pale pinks to moody oxblood, brown-haired beauties can be true fashion chameleons.
