There are a number of settings on your iPhone that are helpful, and a few that you could stand to disable. If a certain setting is killing your battery or invading your privacy and snatching your data, it may be doing you more harm than good. The bottom line is that you don’t have to keep any setting enabled on your phone — even a default setting — unless you want it there.

If you’re not sure where to even begin, follow some great tips outlined in this video and turn off these eight “unnecessary” iPhone settings to save your battery and protect your privacy.

Unnecessary System Services

Go to Settings > General > System Services. Here you’ll see a number of system services that are toggled on, like Location-Based Suggestions, Share My Location, and Motion Calibration & Distance. Turn off settings like those under Product Improvement, for example, which requires that your phone runs constantly in the background and sends Apple your data. Turn off location settings to keep your private data more private.

Location Services

On the heels of Unnecessary System Services you’ll want to turn off Location Services to ensure your phone isn’t tracking your every move. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. You don’t have to turn off location services completely, but you will want to change your setting option from “always” to “while using” the app. You can also choose “never” for apps that really don’t require your data.

Analytics & Data

Go to Settings > Privacy > Analytics & Improvements. Here you’ll be able to see what analytics data you are sharing with Apple, such as iPhone Analytics and iCloud Analytics. Toggle off anything you don’t want to share.

In-App Ratings and Reviews

Go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores > and toggle off In-App Ratings and Reviews. This setting is the entire reason why you are bombarded with requests from apps you’ve recently downloaded to rate and review the app. Keeping it off ensures you aren’t annoyed by these alerts.

Background App Refresh

When you have Background App Refresh enabled for all apps, then all of your apps are going to be constantly updating in the background, which is a major battery drain. Head to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Don’t turn everything off completely, but pick and choose the apps that you think benefit from constant refreshes.

Auto-Correction

No, you didn’t mean to type “duck,” did you? Auto-correction can be helpful, but it can also be so annoying — when you’re trying to write a simple text message, it helpfully tries to correct words that it doesn’t understand or doesn’t think you meant to write. You can turn this off by going to Settings > General > Keyboard and turn off Auto-Correction.

Siri App Suggestion

By learning how you use your iPhone, Siri then starts to recommend apps that it thinks you will enjoy. The problems with these suggestions are that they’re probably unnecessary, and they take up battery power. Disable this by heading over to Settings > Siri & Search > Suggestions in Search.

True Tone

The True Tone setting is designed to adjust the brightness and color on your screen, but is it completely necessary? If you don’t find any need for it, head to Settings > Display & Brightness and toggle off True Tone.
