When you think of a makeup product that you may consistently forget is actually a makeup product — but is also so important in your routine — does primer come to mind?
If not, consider this: a good, quality primer can make every stitch of makeup you apply, from concealer and foundation to eye shadow and sometimes even lipstick, look 10 times better. It can also stretch out the time you can wear your makeup without it streaking. But too many of us are forgetting this step. And even if we want to consider it, we may hit up a store like Sephora or our local drugstore and find a billion options — among them, there are green primers that tone down redness, primers that sap up oil, primers that claim to hydrate, etc.
If it’s a whole new world to you, Rise Does Makeup has one tip: skip the other primers and use just one that she believes is amazing for mature skin:
Here’s what you need to know about this great primer.
Rise begins her video by explaining that she often scours TikTok for new makeup content videos, but that she often comes upon younger influencers. These content creators may recommend one product, and that’s all it will take for that product to go viral and send younger shoppers scrambling for it.
Instead of focusing on these TikTokers and products, Risa says she heads over to content made my mature female influencers, who are often former or current makeup artists and who have used their fair share of products and can differentiate among them to find the best of the bunch.
That’s how she says she discovered a primer that blew her away.
Peter Thomas Roth Instant FIRMx No-Filter Primer
Risa discovered this primer by Peter Thomas Roth while watching a TikTok video in which a mature influencer tried it on right on camera — and the difference she noticed was noteworthy.
According to the brand, this primer vows to tighten and blur fine lines, pores, and imperfections. It has a universal tint that corrects uneven tone for all skin types. A blend of silicates and seaweed extracts are claimed to help with the tightening effect of skin. It also claims to provide hydration and long-term anti-aging benefits. And it’s suitable for all skin types.
According to Peter Thomas Roth, you should not apply serums or even moisturizers prior to applying this primer (which is unusual, but it’s important to follow all steps. You should apply a small amount of primer to to freshly cleaned and dried skin, and then remain expressionless until the product has dried. This should take about 3-7 minutes. When your face feels dry and tight you can proceed with makeup application. You can also wear the primer alone.
While trying the primer, Risa says she didn’t notice anything at first, but after a few minutes she saw a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and pores. Showing before-and-after photos, she points out a reduction in redness, pores, and her smile lines. She says she was very skeptical, but that there is an obvious improvement in the appearance of her skin.
But then Risa says she wanted to try out the primer under foundation to make sure it works as well with makeup.
After blending her foundation over the primer with a makeup brush, Risa looks very closely at her skin and says her makeup looked “kind of flawless.” And even after applying the rest of her makeup and looking at her skin in natural light she noticed the same effect.
If you’re interested in trying out this primer for yourself, it will set you back about $42 and is available at Sephora. Reviews for it aren’t all glowing — particularly from reviewers who have dry skin and say it made their makeup patchy. But, overall, it has a 3.8-star rating and plenty of positive reviews, as well.
