Yikes! 6 Popular Acne Products Recalled Due To A Cancer-Causing Chemical

In a concerning development for those using acne-fighting products, six popular treatments from major brands like La Roche-Posay, Proactiv, and Walgreens have been recalled due to elevated levels of benzene, a known cancer-causing chemical.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall notice for multiple lots of six acne treatment products, including Walgreens Acne Control Cleanser, Proactiv Skin Smoothing Exfoliator, SLMD Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Lotion, and La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo Dual Action Acne Treatment.

What is benzene?
Benzene is a harmful chemical contaminant that has been detected in some acne treatment products. Benzene is a known carcinogen, meaning it has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, particularly leukemia and other blood disorders, when people are exposed to high levels over time.
It is not an intentional ingredient in skincare products but can sometimes be introduced during manufacturing, often as a byproduct of certain chemical processes or contaminated raw materials. The recall was issued because prolonged exposure to benzene, even in small amounts, could pose health risks.
In its recall announcement, the FDA emphasized that the recalled skincare products pose a "very low" risk of cancer.
"Even with daily use of these products for decades, the risk of a person developing cancer because of exposure to benzene found in these products is very low," the notice said.
The recalled products have expiration dates spanning from April 2025 to March 2026.
The FDA's recall applies only at the retail level, requesting that stores and online sellers remove the affected products from their inventory.
According to the agency, consumers who have already purchased these items are not required to take any action.
