Our hair goes through many changes throughout our lives. You may have noticed that, with age, it has become thinner, dryer, maybe you’ve even described it as feeling “brittle.” A combination of factors that include hormonal changes, genetics, and even lifestyle could be contributing to your hair feeling and looking less healthy. But the current state of your hair isn’t your hair fate — there are ways to get vibrancy, shine, and volume back to your strands.
If you have fine or thinning hair, start here: these tips from Hair Expert Justin Hickox will help you revive your hair and make it look its voluminous best.
Prep Your Hair
Start by spraying a volumizing product to your damp hair — and you may need to use more than you think. These products provide the illusion of volume and some give your hair much-needed texture, as well. Use your fingers to distribute the product to the roots of your hair, but also to the mid-shift and ends so that the volume you create isn’t just concentrated at the roots. Make sure your hair isn’t dry when you apply it — the best time to use these is right after your shower.
Brush Hair In The Opposite Direction
How often do you grab a brush and blow dryer and begin drying your hair downward, from roots to end? Instead, brush your hair in the opposite direction — for example, brush the strands in the back up toward your crown and the front of your head while you simultaneously dry it. This provide lift and volume.
Use a Round Brush
Use a round brush that’s not a lot smaller than the section of hair that you plan on drying. And this is important: SECTION your hair while drying it! Hickox shares this technique: when you are roundbrushing the back of your head, take each section and wrap it half-way around the round brush, but bent toward the crown of the head. This creates a bend in the hair — a lift, if you will — that will make it look so much thicker.
Flat Irons Can Add Volume
Flat irons have a reputation of only straightening and flattening hair, but they can be used to create more volume, too. Pull sections of your hair forward and add a bend to your hair with the flat iron. When you then brush that hair out it has volume and lift without curl.
Seal the Deal With a Shine Product
After you’re finishing styling with heat, seal the deal with a shine serum that can help hold your hair in place. But here’s a key tip: start by concentrating the product at the back of your head, where most of your hair is — not at your bangs or the front of your hair. Starting at the back can help reduce the chances you’ll end up with greasy looking bangs.
Your pre-styling prep, technique, and how you seal your hair can take it from fine and flat to va-va-va voom.
