Adele may be living her best life with her new beau – 39-year-old sports agent Rich Paul – right now, but it was a totally different story back in 2019 when she was going through her painful divorce from Simon Konecki. In a very candid interview with Rolling Stone, the 33-year-old “Easy on Me” singer just confessed to some truly heart-breaking secrets about what it was like ending things with her husband – who is also the father of her nine-near-old son, Angelo – revealing that she was left “devastated” and even “embarrassed” by what was happening. Our hearts are breaking!

“I didn’t really know myself,” Adele told the mag about that time in her life, as part of her cover interview. “I thought I did. I don’t know if it was because of my Saturn return or if it was because I was well and truly sort of heading into my 30s, but I just didn’t like who I was. I didn’t really know myself. I thought I did. But I just didn’t like who I was.” The “Hello” singer then revealed that the constant public interest in her private life made things even worse, almost making her feel like a failure.

“It made me really sad,” the Oscar-winner continued. “Then having so many people that I don’t know, know that I didn’t make that work… it *expletive* devastated me. I was embarrassed. No one made me feel embarrassed, but you feel like you didn’t do a good job.” We had no idea she felt that way! However, it seems like relocating to Los Angeles and surrounding herself with people who are used to living their lives in the public eye – such as Nicole Richie and Jennifer Lawrence for example – really helped her. Humanized her, even!

“They humanized me because I had avoided talking to anyone that was ever famous in any capacity, because I was like, ‘Well, I’m not famous.’ I’m very British like that,” she said, referring to her fellow A-list friends. “We never spoke about work, which was amazing, because most of the time when I catch up with someone, they want to know all about my work, and I’m like, ‘I don’t want to talk about that. Can we talk about something else? I’m knackered.'”

The “Someone Like You” singer also touched on what it was like trying to date in LA, telling the mag that the rumor mill would always be turning the second she stepped out with anyone new – even if it was super-casual or just the very first date, which as you can imagine, made it very hard for her to meet people like a normal person. “I lasted five seconds,” she joked, in reference to the LA dating scene, adding that blind dates don’t really work for her either, due to the rumor mill being in overdrive in Hollywood!

“You can’t set me up on a blind date! I’m like, ‘How’s that going to work?’ There’ll be paparazzi outside and someone will call DeuxMoi, or whatever it’s *expletive* called! It ain’t happening.” Luckily, she doesn’t need to be set up at the moment, as her new relationship seems to be going from strength to strength. They even went Instagram official last month! You can read the full interview, where the singer also talks about the emotional moment she reconciled with her estranged father before he died earlier this year, in Rolling Stone‘s December issue. And don’t forget, Adele’s highly-anticipated new album “30” is out on November 19th.
