It’s no secret that Adele experienced a dramatic weight loss over the last two years, and while the singer has been open about how she achieved her results, in a new interview with Oprah she also revealed her thoughts on how frequently her body is spoken about. Gearing up for the release of her new album, 30, Adele has been on a press tour discussing everything from her new relationship to her divorce, but it’s her weight loss that she wishes the conversation would shift away from.

After losing nearly 100 lbs throughout the last several years, the singer spoke to Oprah for the Adele One Night Only special, explaining how the commentary on her weight has impacted her. “I’m not shocked or even fazed by it because my body has been objectified my entire career,” she started, adding, “I’m either too big or too small; I’m either hot or I’m not.”

The 33-year-old also noted that fans expressed sentiments of feeling “upset” and “abandoned” when she dropped the weight, as she believes many people held onto her as a beauty standard for women with body types that don’t fit the societal norm.

“I was body positive then and I’m body positive now,” she said about her weight loss. “It’s not my job to validate how people feel about their bodies. I feel bad if anyone feels horrible about themselves but that’s not my job. I’m trying to sort my own life out. I can’t add another worry.”

Adele also made sure to note that she had not actively sought out weight loss, but rather it was a byproduct of creating a healthier lifestyle for herself. “I had the most terrifying anxiety attacks after I left my marriage,” she noted. “They paralyzed me completely, and made me so confused because I wouldn’t be able to have any control over my body.” She then explained that going to the gym became a coping mechanism, and with this came weight loss. “That really contributed towards me getting my mind right,” she said.
