3 Age-Defying Makeup Tips Experts Swear By For Mature Skin

October 19, 2021 by Merrell Readman

Getting older is a fact of life, and with the passing years often comes the development of fine lines and wrinkles that appear through decreased collagen production and built up sun damage. While a well-rounded skincare routine complete with retinol and daily SPF can help to prevent further damage from appearing, it can also be useful to know how to apply your makeup in a way which accentuates your best features rather than drawing attention to your age.

We consulted with Lynnette Cole, Global Education Director for PÜR, and Natasha Moor, Global Makeup Artist and founder of Natasha Moor Cosmetics to get the best tips for applying ageless makeup with ease, and here are their top suggestions for a flawless complexion everyday.

Lightweight Foundation + Primer

Mature skin is more likely to display fine lines and wrinkles, so it’s important not to cake on foundation which will merely sink into these creases and make you appear even older. Instead, starting your routine with primer and then a lightweight foundation will allow the product to sit on top of the skin rather than settling into the creases and highlighting the very places you hope to conceal. “Applying a luminous primer, like No Filter Blurring Photography, before foundation will help emphasize your features and provide a subtle youthful glow to the skin,” notes Cole. “Do not apply makeup directly to fresh skin, because it will seep into lines and wrinkles, emphasizing what you want to minimize,” adds Moor.

Fuller Brows

Thicker, fuller brows can help to create the illusion of a more youthful appearance, and even lift your features for a more lively look. When filling in your brows, however, it’s essential not to go overboard, and begin applying product from the outer edge for a softer look. “When you start on the inside of your eye too close to the bridge of your nose, it’s common to apply too much product,” explains Moor. “When that happens, it can go a bit dark and make you look older and grumpier. In addition, don’t create too much an arch. An overarched brow cancreated a surprised expression, which is aging.”

Soft, Shimmering Eyeshadow

Keeping your eye makeup light and shimmery will help to brighten the face without accentuating any drooping skin or shadows around the eyes. “Adding a soft shimmer eyeshadow or blending a matte pink eyeshadow strategically across the brow bone creates an instant eye lift,” says Cole. “Adding even the tiniest bit of shimmer in a champagne, rose gold or matte pink eyeshadow brings much needed light to the eyes. I love the soft texture of eyeshadows from PÜR’s Extreme Visionary eyeshadow palette to add that pop of color across the eyelid or even just to brighten in the inner corner of the eyes.” Try to avoid dark shadows which may only intensify signs of aging, and stick to youthful and bright shades to allow you to appear more awake.
