A Makeup Artist Explains Why These 2 Lipstick Formulas Can Make You Look ‘Older’: Matte, More

Choosing the right lipstick can feel overwhelming. Between the drugstore aisles and the endless options at Sephora, knowing where to start can be confusing, especially if you’re new to makeup. Makeup artist and beauty influencer Gabi—better known as Glam Girl Gabi—shares the two popular lipstick formulas that could be aging you.

“I teach simple tips and tricks that will have you feeling as gorgeous on the outside as you do on the inside,” says Gabi. To demonstrate, she applied several lipstick formulas on herself and her model Linda, who is in her seventies. By comparing how the formulas look on different ages, lip shapes, and fullness, Gabi highlights which formulas can age your appearance and why. Read on to find out!

Matte Lipstick

If longevity and saturated color are your priorities, matte lipsticks deliver. Gabi notes that they are “super saturated in their color” and transfer less than moisture-rich formulas. However, matte lipsticks can be drying, uncomfortable, and unforgiving, especially for thinner lips.

“Matte lipsticks…have a tendency of making lips and the skin around the lips appear older,” Gabi warns. The flat, sheen-free finish can create a contour effect, which can make already small or thin lips look even smaller. While they’re ideal for bold statements, matte formulas are less forgiving when it comes to maintaining a youthful, plump appearance.

Lip Gloss

If a wet, glossy finish is your vibe, lip gloss is a fun choice. Gabi highlights its versatility, noting it can range from sheer to opaque. However, glosses have the lowest staying power of all lipstick formulas and transfer easily.

Gabi recommends using gloss as a layering product—over matte lipstick or cream—to add shine without sacrificing longevity. While gloss alone may require frequent touch-ups, it can instantly brighten your lips, giving a youthful, fresh-faced look.

The Bottom Line

The right lipstick formula can do more than enhance your makeup—it can make you look years younger. According to Glam Girl Gabi, the best choices for a youthful appearance are formulas that combine hydration and color, like tinted balms, cream lipsticks, or longwear stain with a balm.

Matte formulas, while long-wearing, can emphasize dryness and fine lines, which may make lips appear older. When choosing a lipstick, consider your lip shape, age, and desired effect. A little moisture, subtle sheen, and thoughtful color can go a long way toward keeping your lips looking full, fresh, and youthful—without the constant need for touch-ups.
