Alex Rodriguez isn’t letting his split from Jennifer Lopez get him down too much, as he joked about the status of his current love life while covering the American League Division Series for FOX Sports on Thursday, October 7th with fellow broadcasters Kevin Burkhardt, David Ortiz, and Frank Thomas. We like it when celebs have a sense of humor – potential love interests should take note!
The 46-year-old former baseball player poked fun at himself when the cameras cut to footage of the players from the Tampa Bay Rays eating popcorn in the dugout during their game against the Boston Red Sox. And that reminded one of the broadcasters of a particularly history-making scene involving A-Rod over ten years ago! “It’s not the first time people had been eating popcorn in the middle of the game,” co-anchor Kevin Burkhardt joked, before cutting to an old clip of 49-year-old actress Cameron Diaz – who A-Rod dated on and off between 2010 and 2011 – feeding him popcorn during the Super Bowl XLV. “KB, that’s maybe why I’m single,” Rodriguez instantly and hilariously replied. How quick witted!
We remember the infamous popcorn incident like it was yesterday! The Charlie's Angels actress even spoke about it during an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman while she and the baseball player were still dating, saying at the time, "It was the only piece of popcorn that I even put near his face, and they happened to have the camera on right when I did it." We still chuckle every time we think about it!
Since he and J.Lo called it quits in May this year, A-Rod has actually been fairly quiet in terms of spilling the beans on his relationship, which is a stark contrast to the 52-year-old "On The Floor" singer and her new/old/new again beau, Ben Affleck, as they have both been quite vocal about how "happy" they are with their lives right now. We can't imagine that he is enjoying seeing them flaunting their rekindled relationship, as a source told E! News back in May that the former Yankees player was "saddened" by the news that she and Affleck got back together so quickly. "A-Rod is shocked that J.Lo has moved on," the insider said at the time. "He truly thought they would be able to make it work and reconnect. He has been reaching out to J.Lo trying to meet with her and she has been very short with him."
Thankfully, Rodriguez is now coping much better, and made a comment a few months ago saying that he was "in a great place" and is focusing on "all the positive" things in life, particularly his two teenage daughters Natasha, 16, and Ella, 13, who he shares with ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis. "I had five years of an incredible life and partnership and also with my daughters, we learned so much," Rodriguez told Entertainment Tonight back in August. "You know what? We're so grateful for the last five years, how do we make the next five years better because of lessons learned?" "I'm in a great place," he added. "I'm so grateful for where God and the light has really put me, and I'm really looking forward. Mostly to see how my girls keep developing." We like that he's a glass half full kinda guy now!
