Considering how much of an investment they are, is it any wonder that some of us are searching for ways to make our iPhones last longer? The average iPhone may provide you with a few years of joy before it becomes slightly obsolete (or before you start craving a newer, shinier model). But that doesn’t mean it has to be the norm to switch up your smart phone frequently. There are a few simple tricks that you can follow daily that won’t take up your time or cost money and can add years of life to your expensive iPhone. Apple experts tell us how to make your iPhone last years longer — you’ll wish you knew these tips sooner.
Don’t Use A CaseYou read that right. While a case can definitely help you if you’re taking your phone with you on a hike and want to avoid dropping it and damaging the screen, it isn’t always recommended if your concern is maintaining your phone for years. “The logic behind using cases to protect your phone from cracking when it falls is logical only that it also has a side effect which is to prevent the smooth passage of heat,” says Tech Expert Emma Gordon, the founder at USSalvageYards. “The iPhone overheating can cause damage to the phone’s battery as well as diminishes the intended life span.”
Tech Expert Steve Anderson, CEO of Junk Yard Near Me, agrees. “An iPhone case would seem to be a sensible choice — after all, it might shield your iPhone from injury if you drop it,” Anderson says. “Unfortunately, the iPhone cannot release heat because most cases insulate it. Components like the WiFi module and battery can be harmed if your iPhone heats up.”
Keep Your Phone Turned Off While It’s ChargingDon’t just set your phone on a charger and forget about it — actually turn it off before you charge it to maximize its charging capabilities. “When you leave your phone running, there’s the tendency of your phone gathering heat much more while it is running and charging as well,” Gordon says. “The heat doubles and can kill the battery life as well as other components of the phone. Turning off phones while charging will not only minimize heat but also allow the phone charge faster.”
Change your iPhone BatteryAlthough the lifespan of certain lithium-ion batteries can be extended, Anderson reminds us it will be best to replace the battery for others. “The time of receiving an iPhone for free with a two-year contract has ended,” Anderson says. “Typically, purchasing a new iPhone will cost more than simply changing the battery. Your aged iPhone can operate like new again with a new battery.”
