Ana de Armas Leaves Us Breathless In A Sheer, Corseted Crystal-Embellished Slip Dress
March 23, 2023 by Marissa Matozzo
Ana de Armas shimmered in a crystal-adorned, curve-hugging sheer slip as she graced the Netflix Oscar Nominee Celebration at the Sunset Hotel in Los Angeles. The Blonde actress, 34, seemingly paid tribute to Marilyn Monroe once again in a stunning piece that emulated the late star’s iconic 1962 “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” gown.
The Knives Out alum was a vision in the David Koma nude number, which featured a low-cut, waist-emphasizing bodice top, a long, ankle-length skirt and sparkly detailing. Along with this show-stopping frock, de Armas added matching, pointed-toe heels for the event and accessorized her get-up with gold bangles and a green structured clutch.

The first-time Oscar nominee wore her long brunette tresses down, parted in the center and styled into elegant, Old Hollywood-esque waves. As for her glam, de Armas went for a classic winged eyeliner look, glittery eyeshadow, voluminous lashes and rosy, radiant blush. To top it all off she rocked a vampy crimson lipstick.
The No Time to Die star shared a close-up selfie on her Instagram Story with the caption, “The night before….” for her 10 million followers. Although she didn’t snag the 2023 Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Monroe in Netflix’s Blonde, she still continually wins ‘best dressed’ at red carpet events, in our book!
The David Koma dress, as People Magazine reports, is inspired by the Jean Louis gown that Monroe wore in 1962 at Madison Square Garden to sing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy.
Kim Kardashian, as fans will recall, wore that exact piece to last year’s Met Gala, and this lead to criticism from historians as reports emerged that she damaged the one-of-a-kind item that was custom-made for Monroe’s measurements. Ripley’s Believe it or Not!, the current owner of the dress, has insisted it “was in the same condition” as it was before loaning it to the reality star.
Since its September 2022 release date, the NC-17 rated film Blonde was met with backlash from some critics, who said it “revels in [Monroe’s] victimization and self-abnegation.” de Armas has noted that it is not a biopic, but rather a fictional take on Monroe’s life based on Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 novel from writer-director Andrew Dominik.

de Armas responded to the backlash, telling Variety, “I think that’s what has been tough for the audience to understand about the movie; the emotional truth is so powerful in the film that it’s hard to separate that it’s not a biopic.” She added, “I’ve heard, ‘You missed this part of her life,’ and ‘She was not only sad or depressed.’ And I’m like, ‘I know, but we’re not telling that story.'”
