It’s frequently up for debate which skincare steps are actually essential to be included within your routine for anti-aging, and while we would all like to think our current lineup is doing the most possible for our skin, the reality is there’s always room for improvement. A solid anti-aging skincare routine will not only help to fight off sun damage and prevent issues from developing on the complexion, but it will also help to treat existing fine lines and wrinkles while firming the skin.

To get a definitive answer as to the best step to add to your evening routine for fighting off signs of aging and preserving your complexion, we spoke with Dr. Stacy Chimento, Board Certified Miami Dermatologist of Riverchase Dermatology for a professional opinion on the matter—this is what she had to say.

Serums are one of the most powerful anti-aging agents, and depending on their primary ingredients they can have a major impact on the surface of your skin, particularly in rejuvenating your complexion. More specifically, Chimento notes that serums with a high concentration of hyaluronic acid are going to make the biggest difference when it comes to preserving your skin.

“Serums are light-textured and non-greasy, delivering replenished skin from the inside out. They also contain a higher concentration of active ingredients that have faster results when addressing skin concerns like aging,” she explains.

Hyaluronic acid has been known to help your skin retain essential moisture, making it a useful anti-aging ingredient to fight off the dryness that often accompanies the skin as we age. This particular ingredient has also been known to firm the complexion and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, with a higher concentration working more effectively.

“Serums work best in unison with moisturizers to amplify their hydrating effects without harmful synthetic chemicals and toxins. You can use a face serum once or twice a day after cleansing and toning your skin. Think of it as the step after you cleanse,” suggests Chimento. Using a hyaluronic acid twice a day will help to lock in the moisturizing effect of your face cream while also fighting off signs of aging.

Fortunately hyaluronic acid is one ingredient which has few reports of negative reactions, so you won’t have to worry about the potential irritation that may come with a retinol serum or the like. Taking care to keep your skin hydrated is one of the best ways to fight off aging, and while many people may believe simply using moisturizer is enough, a serum can actually help to enhance your skin’s ability to retain moisture.

“You can expect to have healthy glowing skin that is moisturized with slowly fading pigmentation and fine lines. However, like with all skincare products, it will take time to see definitive results,” adds Chimento.

Maintaining consistency in your routine is ultimately going to award you the best results, and adding hyaluronic acid to the formula can make all the difference in locking in hydration, fading fine lines and wrinkles, and allowing you to maintain a flawless complexion even as you age.

A good road map to follow for your skincare routine is starting with washing your face, then moving on to toner, serum, under eye cream, and finally locking everything in with moisturizer. Of course the final step in the morning will be SPF in order to fight off sun damage and protect your skin for years to come.
