What is Nitric Oxide?
As we age the amount of nitric oxide in our blood vessels decreases. As Dr. Josh Helman, an anti-aging expert at Harvard, explains: nitric oxide is one oxygen and one nitrogen molecule stuck together and it’s “amazing” because, not only does it open up blood vessels, and it’s active in every cell in the body. Nitric oxide also “actually helps ‘rewind’ your biological clock,” and has been shown to help with libido and overall sexual experiences.
Two of the keys to nitric oxide’s success as a supplement are its antioxidant properties and its ability to improve overall circulation, which can benefit every organ in the body, including the brain and heart health.
Do You Need a Nitric Oxide Supplement?
It’s always important to talk with your doctor if you are interested in taking a nitric oxide supplement and want to learn more about it. If you are used to experiencing fatigue, particularly when you exercise (even moderately) or have a condition like hypertension, diabetes, vascular diseases, cardiovascular issues, or insulin resistance, you may be a good candidate for a nitric oxide supplement.
Other ways you can help naturally boost your body’s nitric oxide levels is by exercising regularly, incorporating foods that have nitrates like beets, spinach, and leafy greens in to your diet, and getting enough sleep.
