Aging is a natural process that affects all aspects of the body, including the skin, which is often the first area to show visible signs. As we age, our skin loses collagen and elastin, leading to reduced elasticity, dryness, and the formation of wrinkles. Environmental factors like sun exposure, pollution, and stress can accelerate these changes, making the skin appear older than it is.

While aging is inevitable, derms say that some supplements can help combat its effects by supporting structure, hydration, and overall health.

Dr. Anthony Youn, MD, a plastic surgeon and skincare expert, shared in a YouTube video five types of supplements that can support anti-aging goals and help maintain supple skin at any age—though they’re especially beneficial for mature women! Acording to him, some of the best choices are probiotics and hydrolized collagen. Read on to discover all five!

multivitamins

1. Multivitamin

Multivitamins can benefit overall wellbeing at any age, but did you know they can also be great for anti-aging? Youn suggests this for mature women who want to improve their skin and prevent premature wrinkling. He says to look for a "multivitamin that contains vitamin A, C, D and zinc." He explains that these vitamins have "antioxidants that are great at defending the body against free radicals." Vitamin C in particular is "essential" when it comes to the "production of collagen," he adds.

2. Antioxidants

Next one on his list of go-to anti-aging supplements is antioxidants. Youn states that you should try a supplement that contains a "plethora of antioxidants like resveratrol and curcumin." These antioxidants will help to fight free radicals. They are also "on the cutting edge in anti-aging medicine and they can help you live longer and healthier lives."

omega 3 supplements

3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

We know that omega-3 supplements can aid in better brain health, but they're surprisingly great for your skin too!

Youn suggests "fish oil or even vegan-based omega-3 fatty acids." He also says that there are "many studies that show that these types of fatty acids and omega-3s in particular are anti-inflammatory and can help to reduce inflammatory skin disorders and soothe and moisturize your skin from the inside out."

probiotic supplement

4.  Probiotic

While probiotics help your gut microbiome, the gut is actually linked to the brain and also your skin health in an intriguing way. Youn says there is a "big connection between the health of your gut and the health of your skin." Youn recommends taking a probiotic "with at least 5 billion colony-forming units or more for maximal impact."

5. Hydrolized Collagen

As we get older, we lose collagen, which results in an aged appearance. While this is natural, Youn says you can slow down collagen loss by implementing collagen supplements into your routine. Youn says these supplements "can have big impacts on wrinkles, skin elasticity and hydration."
