There’s an abundance of information out there about supplements, and not all of it is the truth. In recent years the supplement market has exploded and all you can see on shelves and online is options, options, options. Supplements that make huge claims about how they can reverse aging are a particular boom industry, and you can find yourself spending loads of money on supplements that contain more fillers than effective ingredients.
Dr. Anthong Youn cuts through the hype that surround supplements to provide information on six nutrients he says actually do work and are worth taking.
1. Antioxidants
An antioxidant supplement that combines ingredients like resveratrol, vitamin E, and curcumin helps fight free radicals to protect all cells, including skin cells. It also fights inflammation in the body, which is responsible for many diseases and skin issues, including acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
2. Hydrolyzed Collagen Supplement
Dr. Young recommends that all non-vegans take a hydrolyzed collagen supplements. Although there has been some criticism about whether collagen can be absorbed by the body, Dr. Young points to an analysis published in 2020 that looked at 19 different studies on collagen and found the supplement can have a big impact on skin hydration, elasticity, and collagen production. Not only can it help improve your skin, but it can also help make your joints healthier and provide more daily energy.
3. Probiotics
There’s a big connection between the health of your gut and the health of your skin. This is why Dr. Youn says he recommends taking a probiotic with at least 5 billion CFU or more to balance the “good” and “bad” bacteria in your gut. Probiotics also support your immune system and may help with conditions like eczema and acne.
4. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for collagen synthesis and it’s responsible for helping to keep the skin’s elasticity healthy. This vitamin can even boost your skin’s ability to ward off harmful and aging UV rays (make sure you’re still wearing sunscreen) and as an antioxidant it fights free radicals to protect your skin’s cells.
5. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids come from fish oil or a vegan substitute like Krill. There are studies that show these fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and can help reduce inflammatory skin disorders and moisturize your skin from the inside out.
6. Multivitamin
Not everyone is excited about the idea of stocking up on several different types of supplements. If you prefer a one-and-done supplement, Dr. Youn recommends keeping things simple with a multivitamin that contains essential vitamins A, C, D, and zinc. Not only are some of these vitamins antioxidants that defend the body against free radicals, but some (like vitamin C) are also known for helping to create healthy new collagen that boosts the skin’s appearance.
