Wrinkles, age spots, and other signs of aging are often influenced by factors like sun exposure, oxidative stress, and inflammation. As we grow older, our skin’s ability to repair itself slows down, leading to collagen breakdown, uneven pigmentation, and loss of elasticity. However, incorporating the right nutrients into your diet can help combat these effects. Certain anti-cancer foods, rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, not only help protect against diseases but also promote youthful, radiant skin.

Dr. Shintani, a Harvard-trained doctor and nutritionist, recently revealed the one type of food you should be eating because not only is it anti-cancer, but it can also prevent signs of aging. According to him, foods rich in ellagic acid, such as berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries), pomegranates, walnuts, grapes, and cherries, are the ones to add to your diet. Read on to learn more!

Ellagic Acid-Rich Foods

Ellagic acid is a powerful antioxidant and polyphenol found in various fruits and nuts that offer both anti-aging and anti-cancer benefits. It helps slow down skin aging by reducing oxidative stress, which can lead to collagen breakdown, wrinkles, and loss of skin elasticity. It also protects against UV damage, preventing premature aging and hyperpigmentation.

Ellagic acid has been studied for its ability to prevent and slow the growth of cancer cells. It works by neutralizing free radicals, reducing inflammation, and promoting apoptosis (programmed cell death) in harmful cells.

Dr. Shintani highlights the fact that these foods can “prevent wrinkles and age spots and [are] also anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and anti-aging.”

“This polyphenol prevents ultraviolet-induced breakdown of collagen and the inflammation that causes wrinkles and age spots,” he notes. Dr. Shintani also adds, “It has also been shown to slow tumor growth and induce apoptosis or natural cancer cell death.”

The bottom line

He cites a double-blind study that found how this type of food can “improve insulin sensitivity and fasting blood sugar. It is known to stimulate longevity,” specifically sirtuin 1 and 6, which protect telomeres.

As Dr. Shintani emphasizes, they not only promote youthful skin but also play a crucial role in overall health, from improving insulin sensitivity to potentially slowing tumor growth. Adding these nutrient-packed foods to your daily routine is a simple yet effective way to support both beauty and well-being.
