We checked in with Dr. Ralph Waldo to learn about seven inflammation-fighting foods that can aid in healing your liver and stomach problems. He revealed that some of the best options are turmeric, olive oil, leafy greens, fatty fish, and more. Read on to discover all seven.
1. Turmeric
Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with strong anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin helps reduce inflammation by inhibiting inflammatory pathways and enzymes, which can help alleviate inflammation-related conditions in the liver and stomach.
"Turmeric contains curcumin, a potent anti-inflammatory compound. I often recommend turmeric supplements or adding turmeric to foods and drinks. Clients report improved digestion, less pain, and better energy levels," Waldo says.
2. Leafy greens
Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals that have strong anti-inflammatory effects. These compounds help reduce inflammation throughout the body, including in the liver and stomach.
"Leafy greens like kale and spinach provide essential nutrients for liver detoxification and cell health," he says. If that's not all, Waldo says, "Eating them daily can increase energy and improve skin health."
3. Fatty fish
Fatty fish contain selenium and other antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress and inflammation. Selenium, in particular, plays a role in reducing liver inflammation and supporting antioxidant defenses.
Waldo adds that "fatty fish high in omega-3s, such as salmon and sardines, reduce inflammation and support gut and hormone health. Omega-3s are essential for metabolism and mood" and that his "clients who eat fish weekly tend to feel their best."
4. Probiotics
Probiotics can help alleviate symptoms of gastrointestinal distress, such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea, which are often linked to inflammation. By improving digestion and gut motility, probiotics contribute to overall stomach comfort and function.
"Probiotics found in yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut restore gut flora necessary for liver function and digestion. Daily probiotic intake can ease anxiety, improve mood, and boost immunity," says Waldo.
5. Ginger and turmeric tea
The combination of ginger and turmeric in tea provides a synergistic effect, amplifying the anti-inflammatory and healing properties of each ingredient. This makes the tea a potent natural remedy for supporting liver detoxification, reducing stomach inflammation, and promoting overall digestive health.
"Ginger and turmeric tea or supplements soothe the gut and support the liver. Many clients use natural anti-inflammatories to improve digestion and mental wellbeing," he reveals.
6. Cruciferous veggies
These vegetables contain antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, which help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. This helps lower inflammation and protect tissues in the liver and stomach.
"Cruciferous veggies like broccoli and Brussels sprouts improve liver detoxification. Their glucosinolate content supports liver and hormone health when eaten regularly," he notes.
7. Extra virgin olive oil
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is celebrated for its numerous health benefits, particularly its anti-inflammatory properties and its positive impact on liver and stomach health.
"Extra virgin olive oil contains oleic acid, an anti-inflammatory fat that aids digestion and protects the gut lining. Using olive oil in place of other fats helps reduce inflammation in the gut and body," Waldo says.
