Multiple factors can contribute to the risk of stomach cancer, including genetics, infection, and lifestyle factors like smoking and alcohol consumption. The food you eat plays an undeniably crucial role in your overall health, and that includes your cancer prevention efforts. While experts warn against several types of food that could raise your risk of cancer, the good news is that there are also tons of delicious, nutrient-rich foods that can help keep your body well and protected.

To shed some light on a few of the best anti-inflammatory superfoods for preventing stomach cancer, in particular, we spoke to Catherine Gervacio, RDN, a registered dietitian and nutrition consultant for WOWMD. She pointed us towards a few of her go-to favorites, including garlic, berries, and more. Find all of her recommendations below.

1. Garlic

Don't be afraid to add more garlic to your recipes! It's not just good for your tastebuds; Gervacio says this anti-inflammatory ingredient could help prevent stomach cancer, too. "Garlic has allicin that has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It can also help fight H. pylori, a bacterium that is being associated with causing stomach ulcers and cancer," she says. To maximize its benefits, she suggests crushing fresh garlic and letting it sit for 10 minutes before cooking. Try adding it to healthy soups, sauces, or roasted vegetables for a flavorful boost.

2. Green Tea

There's a lot to love about green tea. Not only is it a tasty, energizing way to start your day, but it's also packed with health benefits. This is largely thanks to its catechins, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has been shown to support cellular repair and reduce inflammation, making it a powerful anti-cancer beverage. "Green tea supports cellular repair and reduces inflammation to prevent cancer," explains Gervacio. She recommends drinking one to two cups daily, either hot or iced, or even using it as a smoothie base.

3. Pomegranate Seeds

This fruit may not get as much time in the limelight as some more popular choices, but pomegranate seeds can pack a serious punch when it comes to both flavor and health benefits. They're rich in ellagitannins, compounds that possess anti-cancer properties and support gut lining repair. "Pomegranate seeds are commonly sprinkled over salads or yogurt. Better yet, eat them straight with a spoon," Gervacio says. We'll be eating these all summer!

4. Broccoli Sprouts

Maybe this news will get you to eat your greens! "Broccoli sprouts are concentrated with sulforaphane. It is a compound that helps detoxify the stomach and reduce cancer-causing agents," says Gervacio. She suggests tossing them onto salads, adding them to sandwiches, or blending them into your favorite smoothie recipe.

5. Acai Berries

Acai berries are well-known as a beloved superfood—and for good reason. These berries are loaded with anthocyanins that help combat oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are linked to cancer development, Gervacio explains. "Best to use this by adding it frozen to smoothies or smoothie bowls," she recommends.

6. Spirulina

Don't sleep on spirulina! In recent years, this blue-green algae, commonly blended into smoothies, has gained popularity for its incredible health benefits. "This is due to its chlorophyll content, protein, and anti-inflammatory pigments that support detox and immune defense," Gervacio explains. She recommends adding spirulina to smoothies, mixing it into energy bites, or stirring it into lemon water. Don't knock it 'till you try it!

7. Chia Seeds

Small but mighty, chia seeds offer myriad health benefits—including, Gervacio tells us, cancer prevention. These seeds are great for your gut health, but they also contain omega-3s and fiber, which help lower cancer risk. "Chia seeds help reduce the chances of cancer by lowering systemic inflammation," Gervacio explains. Try out some chia seed pudding for an easy, convenient, and healthy breakfast.

Bottom Line

While no single food can prevent stomach cancer, incorporating these anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich foods into your diet could help boost your health and keep your body protected from disease. When you make smart dietary choices, you support your well-being—and that's the best we can ask for!
