As we age, maintaining healthy, youthful skin becomes a top priority, and incorporating the right supplements into your daily routine can make a significant difference. Anti-inflammatory supplements, in particular, are essential for promoting skin health and reducing the visible signs of aging. These supplements work by combating inflammation, which can accelerate aging and lead to dull, sagging skin.

Doris Day, a dermatologist, recently shared six supplements women over 40 should take to “look and feel younger.” According to her, older women should consider taking vitamin D, resveratrol, quercetin, and more. Read on to discover all six.

1. Vitamin D

Vitamin D supplements are beneficial for anti-aging due to their powerful role in skin health and overall well-being. When it comes to skin, Vitamin D supports the repair and regeneration of skin cells, which can slow the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

"Vitamin D is a no-brainer. Almost all my patients are low in vitamin D. That makes a big difference for your hair, skin, and mood, and it has autoimmune protection and even breast cancer protection,” Day notes.

2. Magnesium

Magnesium promotes healthy skin by supporting collagen production, which helps the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Magnesium is crucial because “it often helps with sleep, and when you sleep well, your skin repairs and looks rejuvenated,” she adds.

3. Quercetin

As a flavonoid, quercetin helps neutralize free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells and accelerate the aging process.

Quercetin is a “bioflavonoid that's found in high concentrations in orange juices and other citrus fruits, and when you take it, it has great anti-inflammatory protection, and that is good for your skin,” Day explains.

4. TA-65

Telomeres are protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that shorten as we age. When they become too short, it leads to cellular aging and increased vulnerability to age-related diseases.

Many people haven’t heard of TA-65, but Day says “as we age our chromosomes get shorter. The shorter they are, the older we are; plus, the ends start to fray.” She says that this supplement can help prevent chromosomes from getting shorter, therefore helping you “look and feel younger.”

5. Omega 3s

Omega-3s help maintain moisture, elasticity, and collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, making skin look more youthful.

Omega-3s are essential as we age, and Day explains why. “We want those essential fatty acids to help protect our skin, heart, and body in general.”

6. Resveratrol

Revera is a resveratrol with sirtuins. “Sirtuins help activate your resveratrol, and that has great antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection that has shown some benefits around longevity," Day notes.

Additionally, its anti-inflammatory effects may help reduce signs of aging in the skin, such as wrinkles and age spots.
