The second you get that dreaded “low battery” alert on your iPhone should be taken as a warning: if you keep using certain apps, that percentage could drop a lot sooner than necessary.

It’s widely known that social media apps like the Facebook app and navigation apps that rely on GPS, such as Google Maps, are draining on your battery power. But there’s another app that is equally, if not more, risky for an already low battery.

This is the one app you should shut down as soon as you get the low battery alert on your iPhone.

One of the reasons we love our iPhones so much is because they provide a fun distraction when we’re commuting or killing time. And a number of the apps that provide entertainment and stress release, like social media apps and video and music apps, also happen to be the biggest offenders when it comes to battery drainage.

Your first step before shutting down or deleting apps is to figure out which apps you use on a regular basis that are killing your battery. To do this, go to Settings > Battery. Scroll down and you’ll see the percentage of battery used by each app in the last 24 hours — or you can click to see usage in the past week.

If you regularly download or stream videos and music, there’s a good chance one of the apps you know and love that provide these services will pop up in your settings as big-time battery drainers.

The minute you receive a low-battery alert, stop using this app — unless you can simultaneously charge your device.

Apps That Stream Entertainment

Apps that stream music, TV shows, videos, and podcasts are absolute killers on your battery power.

“Downloading lots of data doesn't just burn through your monthly data plan; it also burns through your battery life as your phone works to download that data,” reports Techlicious. “That means anyone concerned about battery life will want to avoid apps that are a major data drain.”

The most common culprits when it comes to apps that stream content and then drain your battery are anything that streams video or music: Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, YouTube, Pandora, Spotify, Google+ Hangouts, Skype and FaceTime, according to Techlicious. And there’s really only one good solution.

If your phone tends to lose battery fast, it’s worth it to think ahead and prepare, especially if you can’t live without these streaming services.

“Some services, like Netflix and Spotify, will let you download videos and music to your phone,” reports Techlicious. “If you know you’ll be without a charger, download your music and videos ahead of time.”
