Ready, set, delete — when it comes to the apps on your phone, some are so draining on your battery that the only way to ensure your phone lasts as long as possible is to get rid of a few of the most offensively draining apps.

But which apps, exactly, are slowing your phone down to a roll? Although there are some surprising apps that are no good for your phone (such as Angry Birds), the apps that consume the most battery are probably the ones you expect — busy apps that you use frequently and that work hard to provide constant updates or that stream media. This is the one app that zaps your iPhone battery — even when you’re not using it.

Snapchat

Consider Snapchat the app that doesn’t sleep. Even though the photo and video-sharing app is a ton of fun, and offers a unique way to send messages that will self-destruct in seconds, it’s one of the worst battery hogs out there.

“Snapchat is one of those horrible apps that have no regard for your phone's battery life,” says Jake Smith, Managing Director of Absolute Reg. “The notification service will keep your phone occupied and drain its battery.”

According to Smith, another problem is that Snapchat also makes use of location services to report the user's current position. “It's a Snapchat feature that you can turn on or off depending on what you want to do with it,” Smith says. “The app, on the other hand, is a camera app with chat and video story elements. It consumes a lot of battery because of this. Unless you are a Snapchat obsessive, you should avoid using Snapchat. You can disable the live location functionality in that scenario. If you don't want.”

Another problem with Snapchat is that it consumes your mobile data. To keep this from happening, you can access the main menu in Snapchat, tap on the gear icon, select “Manage,” and enable the “Data Saver” option. From here you have the option of turning this off completely or selecting a number of days to keep it turned off.

Jesse Thé, CEO of Tauria, tells SHEFinds.com that messaging apps consumer far more battery than most other apps, but that streaming apps are another battery-draining source to keep on your radar.

“If you want to know the streaming service app that consumes more battery, it is Amazon Prime Video. Then we have the Netflix App. Maybe Spotify can count as a streaming App, if so, then Spotify is the one that drains more battery life,” Thé says. Whichever the App you use may be, the best tip to improve your battery life is to turn off its background running. Some Apps have automatic downloads, or they send notifications, so turning off that feature will improve the lasting of your battery.”

Thé also reminds us to close the app once you're done using it, and try to only download content when you have your phone connected to the charger. “These tips will improve your battery life while still using streaming Apps,” he says.
