Eye makeup like shadows, liners, and mascara can make all of the difference in your look. They can instantly make you look more refreshed, brighter, more alert, or even more smoldering if you’re going in the direction of smokey makeup. But If you have wrinkles around your eyes and crepey skin, something that is normal and common in most women as we age, it becomes slightly more challenging to work with your skin, not against it, when applying colors and textures to the eye.
The key thing here is that you don’t want to do anything that exacerbates the appearance of wrinkles and crepey skin — but how can you avoid doing so?
Beauty experts and tutorials like The Hooded Lid can help clear up any makeup application confusion:
Here are some of The Hooded Lid’s top tips for flawless makeup application when you have crepey skin or hooded eyes.
Apply primer
Primer is important whether the skin around your eyes is smooth or shows fine lines and wrinkles because it creates a base that allows shadow to go on smoothly. Primer also takes the color of your shadow and pumps it up several notches so that it’s richer and more pigmented. It keeps your makeup on longer, reducing the risk of it caking onto your face a few hours after application.
Pull the lid back so that it’s taut
If you’re applying eyeshadow to your eyelid without pulling it back enough to make it smooth, you could actually be missing spots of your lid and your makeup could come out patchy and uneven. With one finger, gently pull your eyelid taut and then apply a medium-shade shadow to your entire lid.
Don’t forget to add shadow to the crease
It’s all about creating dimension. Pull the lid taut once again and add a slightly darker shadow to the crease of the eyelid so that it creates a separation between the lower and upper lid. When you open your eye to survey your makeup in a mirror you may find that your shadow as “disappeared,” especially if you have hooded eyes. This is your cue to apply some of that contour a bit higher, closer to your brow, to create that effect.
Blend eyeshadow with your eyes open
We spend more of our day with our eyes open and this is how the world sees us, so blending your eyeshadow well with your eyes open makes completely sense. This will also ensure you are blending your makeup well if you have hooded eyes and your lid covers some of your contour makeup.
Focus on eyeliner
Eyeliner can be your best ally when you have crepey skin around your eyes. This is because instead of worrying about shadows sinking into the folds of skin, you can create a wing that extends the appearance of the eye and makes it look more uplifted. To do this, be sure to gently pull your lid taut once again (are you sensing a theme here?) and apply the liner to the upper lash line, before gradually thickening it toward the outer corner of the eye and tilting the liner slightly upward to create a flick. Always apply primer before eyeliner and then set your liner by applying a long-wearing eyeshadow in the same shade over the line.
These simple tips can really help make the most of your gorgeous eyes, no matter what age you are.
