When Ariana Grande appeared on an episode of Penn Badgley‘s Podcrushed podcast, her voice changed drastically while she was in the middle of making a comment about her new music, which understandably sent her fans into a frenzy on social media.

A viral clip from the interview shared on TikTok by user @scatsoplat shows the 30-year-old “The Boy Is Mine” singer talking about recording new music in a deep voice, before switching to a much higher-pitched voice (think Victorious and Sam & Cat!) in the middle of the comment.

Ariana Grande’s Fans Comment On Her Voice Change In TikTok Video

“How did that just happen?” asked one confused fan in the comments section, followed by two crying emojis. “This is actually crazy,” wrote another, as someone else said, “I don’t even know what her real voice sounds like anymore,” followed by three crying emojis. “Every time I hear her talk her voice sounds so different,” agreed another.

“She changes personalities every era like that’s dedication!” exclaimed one fan, while a few others compared her to another famous person who is known for changing her voice. “Giving Paris Hilton,” quipped one fan, as another added: “It’s like Paris Hilton with her voices.”

Ariana Grande Explains Her Voice Change

The "We Can't Be Friends" singer caught wind of the attention her voice-shift was getting on social media, and gave fans an explanation in the comments section of the above TikTok. And it's not as controversial as the internet first thought…

Grande explained that the voice change was down to "habit" since taking on the role of Glinda in the Wicked movie, and "vocal health." Her comment read: "Habit (speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health." She added: "Intentionally change my vocal placement (high / low) often depending on how much singing I'm doing. I've always done this BYE." And there we have it!
