Switching up your diet can make a major difference in the health of your heart. In addition to adding antioxidant-rich foods to your meals in order to protect your body from disease, it’s also important to limit your intake of certain foods that could be increasing your risk of clogged arteries and even heart disease. While you may already know that it’s best to stay away from fatty, fried fast food, some of your go-to breakfast choices may also be holding you back from a healthy heart.

To discover a few of the worst artery-clogging breakfast foods out there, we spoke to dietitian Krutika Nanavati. She told us that sugary cereals, processed meats, and sweet bakery items are among the biggest culprits of heart issues. Read on to learn more.

1. Sugary Cereals

Cereal can be a great, tasty way to fit a quick breakfast into your morning when you're in a rush. After all, all you have to do is pour it into a bowl and add some milk! However, Nanavati warns that what you gain in convenience with this sugary food, you could lose in health. This is largely due to all of the sugar it packs in, which can lead to a range of risks, including heart disease.

"Despite their convenient appeal, many breakfast cereals are excessively high in sugar and low in fiber, contributing to a rapid spike and subsequent crash in blood sugar levels," she says. "This can lead to an increased risk of developing heart disease over time." Yikes! Instead of choosing sugary varieties, she suggests opting for whole grain options that are high in dietary fiber and low in added sugars.

2. Processed Meats

There's nothing like the smell of bacon in the morning. Unfortunately, though, your heart doesn't love processed meats like this as much as your taste buds might. Nanavati says they make some of the worst breakfast foods for your arteries.

"Processed meats such as sausages and bacon are another common breakfast staple that can clog arteries," she says. "They tend to be high in saturated fats, which can raise your bad cholesterol (LDL), resulting in poor heart health."

Luckily, there are plenty of healthy alternatives, including lean proteins like turkey, chicken, and plant-based options like tofu and tempeh.

3. Bakery Products

We love a morning trip to pick up a pastry at the bakery as much as the next guy. But much to our dismay, Nanavati says baked goods like these, which are packed with harmful refined carbs, should be avoided if you want to keep your heart health in great shape.

"While tempting, bakery products like muffins and pastries are often laden with unhealthy trans fats and sugars," she says. "These substances can cause inflammation and a build-up of fatty deposits in your arteries, leading to heart disease. A healthier alternative would be homemade muffins or bread made from whole grains, nuts, and seeds." Got it!

The bottom line

At the end of the day, there are many factors that contribute to the overall health of your heart. Things like exercise, stress levels, sleep, and more all play a role. However, your diet is one of the most crucial aspects of your health, especially when it comes to your heart. While having a croissant every now and then won't kill you, keeping your intake of these foods to a minimum is a good idea if you want to avoid clogged arteries.
