As women age, hormone levels, particularly in women over 35, can fluctuate and become imbalanced. This can lead to a range of symptoms, such as mood swings, fatigue, and even weight gain. The good news is that there are ways to control and balance your hormones! While things such as proper nutrition are helpful, vitamins and minerals can also play a key role in assisting hormone regulation while also promoting energy and supporting metabolic functions.
We checked in with Dr. Andrew Youssouf, medical director at Ikon Recovery, to learn about four different vitamins and minerals you should start taking in the AM to help balance your hormones. According to him, vitamin D, vitamin B6, magnesium, and vitamin E are some of the best options.
1. Magnesium
Taking magnesium in the AM can help support energy levels, mood, and overall hormone regulation throughout the day. This can help calm symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, and even menstrual irregularities that are common with age-related hormonal changes.
Magnesium "helps regulate stress hormones and supports overall hormone health," he says.
2. Vitamin E
Vitamin E can help reduce oxidative stress, which can support the hormone production and function. It’s also beneficial in regulating estrogen and progesterone, two key hormones that fluctuate with age.
Dr. Andrews says Vitamin E "balances estrogen levels and may help alleviate perimenopausal symptoms."
3. Vitamin D
Vitamin D supports the function of the endocrine system, which is responsible for producing and balancing hormones.
Dr. Andrew notes that it also "supports hormonal balance, particularly for estrogen and testosterone levels."
4. Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 aids in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. These can help regulate things such as mood and stress.
Dr. Andrews adds that they "aid in hormone production and can help reduce PMS symptoms."
