Belly fat is a common concern for many people, as it can be both stubborn and challenging to lose. While exercise and calorie control are key factors in reducing abdominal fat, the role of diet is often underestimated. Missing certain nutrient-rich foods from your diet can hinder your ability to shed belly fat effectively. These foods play crucial roles in boosting metabolism, balancing hormones, and reducing inflammation—all of which are essential for targeting fat in the abdominal area.

We checked in with Lisa Richards, nutritionist at The Candida Diet, and Lainey Younkin, a registered dietitian and founder of Lainey Younkin Nutrition, to learn about two foods you should be eating more of to help with losing that stubborn belly pouch. They revealed that berries such as strawberries and blueberries and lean meats are the ones to add to your diet. Read on to learn more.

1. Berries Such As Strawberries & Blueberries

Strawberries are not only a delicious and versatile fruit but also a potent ally in the battle against belly fat. Packed with fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, strawberries offer a range of health benefits, including weight loss support. Their high fiber content helps promote feelings of fullness, reducing overall calorie intake and supporting weight management efforts.

Richards says this low-calorie food can be "quite hydrating, which can add to your satiety and prevent overeating. Strawberries deliver a significant source of vitamin C, which is beneficial for immune support. They are made of simple carbohydrates, which the body uses as a quick source of fuel for energy and mental clarity."

Blueberries are small but mighty when it comes to supporting weight loss and targeting stomach fat. These vibrant berries are loaded with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins, making them a nutrient-rich addition to any diet.

Similar to other berries, Richards says this blue wonder "contains fiber and phytonutrients, which act as antioxidants in the body. Antioxidants work to reduce free radical damage from toxins, which lead to inflammation and chronic disease, like obesity."

She also adds that "blueberries are the highest in antioxidants. Their specific antioxidants are flavonoids, plant compounds that give these berries protection and, when consumed, give us similar protection on a cellular level as well."

2. Lean Meats

Lean meats can help with belly fat by providing a high-quality source of protein, which is essential for building and maintaining muscle mass. Muscle burns more calories at rest than fat, so increasing your muscle mass can boost your metabolism and help reduce overall body fat, including belly fat. Additionally, protein from lean meats helps keep you feeling full and satisfied for longer periods, reducing the likelihood of overeating or snacking on unhealthy foods.

"Chicken and salmon are great high-protein options for dinner. One 3-ounce serving of chicken has 25 grams of protein with very little fat and no carbohydrates," Younkin says. "A 4-ounce portion of salmon has 23 grams of protein and also comes with heart-healthy omega-3 fats that help reduce inflammation." For added health benefits, she says, you can "add half a plate of non-starchy vegetables, like broccoli, and a whole grain, like farro."
