For many of us, our locks can become damaged from heat styling tools or tight hairstyles, which (combined with natural aging) can lead to hair loss. While this is a concern that a doctor, hair expert and trichologist visit can help solve, in the meantime, there are clever hairstyles and cuts to get at your favorite salon to disguise any thinning or breakage. We reached out to Gina Rivera, celebrity hairstylist and Founder of Phenix Salon Suites who detailed 3 short hairstyle ideas that stars love (and that you can try at any age or with any hair texture).

1. Wavy, Angled Bob

The first cut Rivera recommends is a wavy, angled bob as seen here on Drew Barrymore. This look, “styled with beach waves” is perfect for “creating volume and framing the face for our older beauties,” Rivera says. The framing of the face, she notes, will contribute to softening features. “This style is easy on the hair because it doesn’t require a lot of heat which can contribute to damaging the hair,” Rivera adds, suggesting to “just towel dry the hair after washing.” Her other tips include to “add some gel from mid shaft to end, and scrunch slightly to emphasize waves and curls, then allow to dry.” This style is darling when “tucked behind one ear or just worn down,” she says.

2. Textured, Asymmetrical Lob

A textured, asymmetrical lob is another cut, as seen on Priyanka Chopra, that can give a youthful exuberance at any age. “This style is so hip that it’s perfect for making our ladies in their prime look super chic,” Rivera says. “Removing a bit of length from the hair adds to movement and creates a youthful appeal.” She also says that “texturing the hair” creates an opportunity to remove some of the damaged ends and weight, “which bring more life to the hair as well.”

3. Long, Angled, Layered Bob

Last (but definitely not least) is a long, angled and layered bob, seen on Rachel McAdams. “This is another great option, especially for those that don’t want to cut all of their hair off,” Rivera says, noting that layering allows for the removal of damaged ends and also creates “a lot of opportunities for styling.” Curls, waves and other styles look great with layers, she says, and this cut is “perfect for those that are young at heart.”

Rivera concludes by saying “it’s best to always consult with your stylist on a maintenance schedule,” but for those trying to regain hair health, “make sure to trim every 4-6 weeks.” It’s also “super important.” she says, to use a great wet line packed with biotin, collage, and B Vitamins. She recommends Pure BioGen Complex, which is “similar to a super multi-vitamin” for the hair. The more you know!
